Firemore Beach: £2 A Night

What a location, what a great place to be allowed to camp and all for the princely sum of £2 a night or £10 a week.

If I remember rightly the proceeds from the camping are put towards the local school. A sign on the gate advises you that it is ok to camp but to respect the countryside and not to leave a mess. Quite right, as well.

There's plenty of room although much of the ground isn't particularly level. We managed to find ourselves a seaview pitch that was fairly level and later, were joined by a small hightop.

There are no facilities at Firemore, no toilets, no water, no nothing except the great outdoors. Nearest public toilets are in Poolewe, 5 miles down the road!

The beach is glorious, fine sand with an islet to walk to and a lack of people. It was so hot when we arrived, I just had to go for a swim.No sooner had I decided this than the sun disappeared and the wind got up.I was determined, not having had many opportunities to swim from a beautiful sandy beach in northern Scotland, it is usually too cold! So, in I went. It was certainly refreshing and I didn't linger too long, apart from on the way back out when the shallows felt like a warm bath.I was glad I had made the effort and felt definitely refreshed.

We watched the local coastuard patrolling the waters, a large boat we had seen anchored at Aultbea, and wondered what it's duties were.

Later, a group of local teenage girls came down to camp, obviously a regular event as they immediately set to to build a camp fire. It was nice to see teenaers enjoyin the simple life, even if they were on their mobiles most of the time!!!

If you need somewhere to camp in these parts, Firemore is a great place ..... no rules, no crowds
