Longrigg Green: In the Heart of Eskdale

My brother and partner have just bought this holiday let house right in the heart of the beautiful Eskdale valley in the western Lake District. We are visiting it this weekend so shall suss it out.

It's a massive house, complete with drying room and the most beautiful garden. Situated centrally in Eskdale Green, it is a wonderful rural retreat.

Unique Quality: Holiday Cottage to Rent—Sleeps 8

Longrigg Green is a 5 star, 4 bedroom house in Eskdale Green, 2 minutes walk from the Bower House pub and 5 minutes walk to the village shop. It has large gardens, lounge, kitchen, dining room, conservatory, drying room and lots more.

Ring Sherill or Nigel on 019467 23229 for more details. Don’t delay, it is getting booked up fast.

Hollins Farm Campsite: Further Along....

The second campsite in the valley. Handy for Dalegarth Station, the terminus for Ratty.
Smaller than Fisherground but then cheaper.
The facilities are a little away from the camping area, at the farm.
This site does accept caravans (3) but I wouldn't like to have to follow one along here!!!
Choice of two pubs within a mile.

Unique Quality: AUGUST 2007 UPDATE.

I believe this site has now become part of the Camping and Caravan Club network and facilities are being modernised and extended.

No caravans. Tents and motorhomes only.

More info when available.

King George 1V: Where to stay.....

There are a few inns in the Eskdale Valley, accommodation and food are available at them. As I haven't stayed at any of them, I'll just put their websites down.

Fisherground Campsite: Handy for Ratty

The first of two sites on this valley road, heading towards Hardknott Pass.Fisherground is where we spent many a weekend with our tent, both before children and after. It's popularity has increased greatly and now it is just too busy for us. Also, the prices have risen enormously, especially if like us, you are used to the prices of Caravan Club CL's.

The site only takes tents, trailer tents and small motorhomes. No caravans, due to the practicalities of getting here, (narrow, winding roads.)

THere are showers and toilets and privacy cubicles (or there were) but I think for the amount of people who use this site, they are not sufficient, especially in high season.
Laundry facilities. And a fridge.

When the main site is getting full, an ajoining field is opened. This is not as attractive as the main site but it does have the bonus of backing onto the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway.

Unique Quality: I know we loved this site because you were allowed to have camp-fires, not something most sites allow. Half the fun was to go out foraging for wood.

For those with children, there is a rafting pond and an adventure playground.

The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway (Li'il Ratty) has a halt here.

For those who don't come fully supplied, there is the King George 1V pub just along the road.
