sights in Melrose

I will be staying in Melrose for a week this summer...any sights that must be seen in that area?

The Borders region is famous for its (ruined) abbeys. Check my Scotland pages for pics and info on Melrose Abbey. There's also a tip on St Abb's Head (maybe 30 miles away) that might interest you.

Send me an email if you'd like some more info...

A week? The Borders is a pleasant enough area, with some quaint towns, but not a lot of big sights. Close enough to Edinburgh to visit. Great area if you like mountain biking.

Melrose and the Abbey

by stevezero

--------------------------------------------------

Melrose is a quaint town in the Borders region of Scotland. it is domnated by the magnificent ruin which is Melrose Abbey
Not far from the town is also the remains of an old Roman settlement, Trimontium. This included a fort large enough to house 800 cavalry, and what was probably the most northerly amphitheatre in the Roman Empire.

Melrose Abbey is located in this small city. Melrose Abbbey is the burial place of Robert the Bruce's heart. Although it is mostly in ruins, it is easy to see how grand this establishment once was!

Melrose is 45min. to an hour south of Edinburgh.

"More Small Scottish Towns"

There isn't much to say about Melrose, as anyone who takes a tour of the Scottish Borders can do all of these ancient abbeys (Kelso, Jedburgh, Dryburgh (in St. Boswells) and Melrose) in one day. Priorwood Gardens is also nearby at this site. See the details of the abbey on the travel tip page...
