Arden House Calander
A Good Bet in the Trossachs
We had a wonderful 3 day stay at Arden House. Callander is a great home base for day trips throughout Scotland including the Trossachs, Oban, Glen Coe, Edinburgh, Stirling and the Highlands. Our hosts, William and Ian made the B&B experience very enjoyable. William is outgoing, refined and a wealth of information. Ian is more behind the scenes as he prepares the great food for breakfast. The breakfasts were the typical Scottish breakfasts with a special dish of the day. We enjoyed buttermilk pancakes on the second day, a good change of pace. I tried a breakfast portion of haggis - somewhat overrated but Ok when mixed with the eggs. All the food was of the highest quality.
The Victorian country house is well appointed with modern fixtures and Victorian period furniture. There are 5-6 bedrooms, all with private baths. We liked the bars of soap rather than the standard European soap/shampoo liquid. Sometimes it is the small things that matter. The grounds are well landscaped on a down hill slope. There is ample private parking behind the house.
Unique Quality: The house was the backdrop for a 1970's BBC TV series called "Dr. finlay's Casebook". There is a lot of memoribilia from the show throughout the public spaces of the house.
William gave us lots of good advice on local restaurants and pubs. His best piece of advice was to avoid driving to Edinburgh and take the Scot Rail train from nearby Dunblane. It saved us a lot of time and hassle. The train arrived at Waverly Station and we took a taxi right up the hill to the Castle. We really enjoyed the day without having to worry about City driving and parking.
Directions: Bracklinn Road is on the eastern edge of town. Just go up the hill about a 1/4 mile.
