The Falkirk Wheel - Visitor Centre

by stevezero

The Visitor Centre (right in photo) provides visitor access to the Falkirk Wheel. Admission is free and you get great views of the wheel and of ascending and descending boats, It is hard to resist the temptation to take a boat trip yourself though!

The visitor centre also has a shop, selling all manner of thngs to do with the wheel and other transport memorabelia, There is also a working model of the wheel and an audio visual preentation.

Old Parish Church

by stevezero

The first church on this site, probably dates from the 7th Century. The square tower dates from a building around 1450. An octaconal tower was added in 1733. The main church was reconstructed in 1811. the lower part of the church contained the burial ground of the Livingston family of nearby Callendar House.

"The Arms of Falkirk Council"

Falkirk council has an identical area to the previous Falkirk District Council and has accordingly been allowed to matriculate the same arms.

The arms are based on those of the area's four burghs. Tthe first quarter is for the Burgh of Falkirk. A version of the arms of the Callander family is used. The embattled bend refers to the Roman Antonine Wall. The second quarter is for the Burgh of Grangemouth. The stag's head and crosslet stand for the Bellenden family and Holyrood Abbey. The third quarter is for the Burgh of Bo'ness. The ship refers to the town's importance as a port. The red colour of the field stands for the Hamilton family, while the black is for the coal mining industry. The fourth quarter is for the Burgh of Denny and Dunipace. This shows the angel of peace. Three important treaties have been signed in the area.
The motto means "One for All".
