More about Comlongon Castle
We loved Comlongon
Comlongon Castle has it all - lovely and updated rooms, comfortable beds, nice staff, beautiful grounds, a bar, dining, event facilities, souvinirs - what's not to love? Even the price is reasonable.
In addition to our accomodations, we particularly enjoyed the animals on the property. We fed fish in the pond (with the blessings of the castle staff), observed their Highland cows (looked like small wooley mammoths), and watched the horses run in the fields. The drive into Comlongon is down a very long lane, which adds to the enchantment of the property.
The staff was very accommodating - the night we were there the dining room was closed for renovations, so they offered to take us and pick us up from the local pub. I must say the pub they took us to (Farmers Inn, I think) was the only thing that wasn't swell that evening - absolutely no personality in that place whatsoever. Maybe it was just an off night, I don't know.
The thing that I really like about Comlongon is that even though updates are being done, the integrity of an ancient castle seems preserved. Everything is nicely done, but not overdone. It still looks like an oldtime castle, but is comfortable and has modern conveniences.
We had a blast there and highly recommend Comlongon Castle.
My Fairytale Wedding...
We got married at Comlongon Castle on Monday 18th Feb. I booked it the february before, and it was so easy to plan for! we did only have 16 guests, but it was so not stressful! The wedding orgwniser sorted out everything! i just kept in contact via email.
On the morning of the wedding we drove there. I couldn't believe my eyes! its such a beautifulplace, and i still cant believe we married there! Our bedroom was gorgeous! 4 poster, beautiful bathroom. You wouldn't believe it until you saw it! My hair dresser did my hair in the bedroom. Everything ran so smoothly. Guests congregated downstairs and had a beautiful buffet. The buffet was brought up to my room. I felt like a proper princess for the day! The guests were then piped across to the tower and led up the spiral stone staircase. I was then piped round. I then walked in to a big room with lots of flags and an open fire. We were very lucky with the weather. it was freezing cold but the sun really shone for us. This meant we could use the grounds for some stunning pictures. The guests then warmed up by the fire in the castle and with mulleed wine. The evening meal was thenserved. i have honestly never tasted such good food! it was delicious! we had 5 courses and i was bursting out of my dress! we then had a lazy evening with our guests, and brought along a guitar in which we all had a drunken sing-song! Breakfast the next morning was fab too! I didn't want to leave Comlongon Castle! It was so perfect, and they treated me like a princess. Nothing was too much trouble. We wanted things low key, such as no speeches or fanfares, but they can do the opposite if you require! This place is much more than 5*. If you want to get married in a castle, this is it! There is no down side! It sounded too good to be true. The pricing was much cheaper than expected too. 2K for 16 people, including everyone to stay over, buffet, 5 course meal and breakfast for everyone. We would definately recommend!
What a FANTASTIC place - we highly recommend it
We got married at Comlongon Castle over the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd February. We chose the 2 night stay and it was perfect from start to finish. It is not often we recommend somewhere, but we feel compelled to do so with Comlongon due to the service, the food, the setting which made for a fairytale wedding.
The staff are incredibly hospitable and professional and nothing was too much trouble. They made us and our guests feel so welcome and I truly did feel like a princess. The quality of the food was excellent with a huge amount of choice for the wedding banquet, offering guests an open menu from which to choose.
Every time I thought of something I wanted and that I should raise with the staff, they had already thought of and sorted out themselves so I could just relax knowing everything was under control.
The venue itself is simply stunning. The rooms are full of character and individually designed, most with 4 poster beds. The room we stayed in had an amazing bathroom with huge Jacuzzi bath. All our guests commented on how wonderful everything was. With the open fire places in the public areas, and the lovely view and grounds, you cannot go wrong.
A huge thank you to Phil and Neil who went above and beyond to make everything so fantastic.
I admit to being somewhat surprised by the number of 5 ratings given to this hotel.
The staff were excellent as was the food. The setting I could not fault, but the rooms.......As guests at a wedding, a complaint at the time was inappropriate but i found the room a considerable disappointment. Highly overpriced, under furnished badly decorated, anything but luxurious. I did see the bridal suites and thought the website pictures bore little resemblance to the reality. Incidentally is it pure coincidence that the cheaper rooms are not pictured on the site at all? Anyone planning a wedding would be advised to view all of the rooms beforehand. Sadly I would not recommend this hotel.
The Enchanted Castle
My daughter and her now husband chose this venue for their wedding Easter 2008. My only insight into their choice before the actual event was the official website. I confess to a fear that the content perhaps was too good to be true. My fears were totally unfounded, because in reality the Comlongon experience cannot wholly be expressed in words and pictures. You have to feel it.
The location is breathtaking. From the moment you enter the long drive through the grounds, you can feel the welcome that awaits you. For myself and our wedding party which took over all the rooms in the castle, every one of us felt the magic of this place. I am reluctant to refer to the custodians of this amazing place as 'staff'', because their committment to uphold your every expectation goes way beyond the call of duty. Even the glorious highland cattle gracefully wandering in the background play their part beautifully. Every moment of our stay as well as the very diverse event itself and the incredible organization will sustain us all until we return for a top up. The rooms were all wonderfully representational of its long history, but not at the expense of the expectations of life today. The wedding 'breakfast' itself was without doubt the best I have ever experienced in both quality and choice. In conclusion I can only say believe the website. Be guided by their expertise, and revel in your own fairy tale.
Brides to be Beware...
Having done an awful lot of research on the castle, my partner and I put Comlongon at the top of our list as a possible wedding venue. We were so certain it had everything we wanted that we took advantage of the 'free room' offer for potential brides and booked to stay at the castle. The free room only becomes 'free' if you book your wedding with them, but we were so sure that we would we were willing to pay out over £250 to stay in one of the suites and sample the food. At first everything met our expectations: the castle and grounds were lovely, the staff accommodating and friendly, and the food good. I was rather disappointed with the room because the suite looked a little shabby and worn (not worth the high price charged), and we didn't receive the champaign and chocolates promised with the suite until we asked for them (twice!). I would have been willing to overlook these things because on the whole the venue had everything we were looking for (beautiful surroundings, intimate bar, gorgeous banqueting suite etc.); however, what followed after we checked out put me off the castle completely. We accidentally left some clothes in the wardrobe and despite calling the castle and speaking to the manager as soon as we arrived home to ask him to send the items to us (at our expense) we have never received them. I rang the castle every week for three months before giving up trying to get the items back and each time I was told that the staff had our clothes and would return them immediately. Eventually it transpired that the clothes carrier they thought was ours belonged to somebody else. Nobody knew what had happened to ours - it had magically disappeared - and nobody bothered to apologise or go out of their way to locate our things. As somebody who was prepared to spend thousands of pounds on a wedding at the castle, I now have no conficence in the ability of the staff to communicate with each other or take care of precious items, like a wedding dress or cake. Sure it was arguably our own fault for leaving something behind, but as we informed the staff that we had left something before anybody else had time to check into our room, we at least expected them to put our items somewhere safe until they could be returned. I feel utterly disappointed by the experience because it cost us over £250, my best silk dress and my partners best evening wear to find out that Comlongon wasn't suitable for us. Brides to be beware!
Our Perfect Wedding!!
We visited Comlongon Castle in May 2007 as a possible wedding venue along with various places in Gretna Green. The castle was the last venue we saw and we were just starting to lose hope that we would find somewhere suitable until we saw the castle and we were totally wowed by it!!
The long driveway to the castle was beautiful, the grounds and plants and views were wonderful, and the castle itself was totally magical. We knew that was the venue for our wedding. Nowhere else came close.
We subsequently booked it for May 2008 for around 30 guests. The castle were extremely helpful in the lead up to the wedding answering the many emails I sent very quickly.
On they day our guests faces said it all, they loved it too. We had 3 children come to our wedding and they loved exploring around and feeding the fish in the pond.
The help we received from all the staff, especially Neil, was second to none and they guided us through the day so that we did not have to worry about a thing!! The photos are beautiful. The food was excellent, a good choice of dishes and really delicious. We had the full size Ceildich band in the evening which we would definately recommend, they got everyone up and doing Scottish Dances and a Sword Dancing competition which was excellent fun.
We could not have wished for any more for our wedding and everyone cannot stop talking about it. Thank you Comlongon!! xxx
Comlongon Castle - a day to remember... for all the right reasons
My stay at Comlongon had been much anticipated, it was my best friends wedding and for me it couldnt come quick enough.
I had obviously heard so much about the place for months before hand and myself and the bride had scrutnised the website for hours. It looked impressive in the photos but I can honestly say hand on my heart, the website doesnt do it enough justice, its an absolutely stunning setting.
The Castle staff were attentive and made sure the whole day ran smoothly from the moment we arrived. Being bridesmaid, I can honestly say that myself and the best man had little to worry about - there were certainly no catastrophies to sort out and am sure if they had been the staff would have been more than willing to resolve.
The day was superb, I can honestly say I 100% fell in love with Comlongon, setting is breathtaking, food was excellent, staff were friendly and very good at what they do. The day ended with a good old knees up to the hotel band - top class fun, my shoes were off and I was dosey doe'ing like a good un!!
It certainly was a magical day to remember, im so glad I was there to share the joy of my best friend and her lovely husband, you could see they had the time of their lives and that meant everything to me.
So to summise, get yourself to Comlongon, you wont be dissappointed!!
We recently got married at Comlongon Castle and can honestly say that it was the most perfect day we could ever have asked for.
The whole experience was mind blowing, right from the moment we arrived. All the staff were very friendly, polite and were happy to help with anything to make our day perfect.
The web page really does not do the venue any justice what so ever and must be visited to feel the whole experience. I can not understand why anybody could honestly be negative about this wonderful place.
A Perfect Day
We visited Comlongon Castle in February 2008 as a possible venue for our Wedding. We loved the venue and surroundings so much we booked there and then.
We arranged to get married in April 2008 leaving 2 months to arrange the big day. We found the staff very helpful with all the arrangements making it less stressful for us.
The Castle was currently being re-furbished whilst we were there however in no way did it affect our stay and all rooms were excellent.
On the day itself all the staff made sure everything went smoothly even finding a local dentist for one of our guests!!
The Banquet menu offered something for everybody and the food was fantastic!!!
We had the perfect day and are looking forward to our next stay.
I would recommend Comlongon Castle to anybody, excellent staff, beautiful surroundings what more could you ask for.
