Travel Tips for Dumfries

Happy Hogmanay

by Ruthy2001

Im not sure if this is particular to Dumfries culture or simply Scottish but I think Dumfries is particularly fun at Hogmanay. Most people go to the local pubs until about 11 then head back to house parties. After 12 the tradition is to go "first footing" round the houses with a piece of coal and a bottle of whiskey...this tends to include the whole family and is great fun - we were lucky enough to grow up near a whole street of friends so it was very safe but the idea is to bring luck to each household by having a quick drink and welcoming in the year together..you can usually also expect to see fireworks in the town centre.

This was my playground as a kid. My father was manager here during most of the period that it was owned by the SCWS, later Henry's.
The Loreburn Hall , and the old Scaffy Depot are just off to the right. Sadly the building was demolished many years ago to make way for car parking

"Nithdale"

Dumfries has a long historic past and remains the administritive centre for Dumfries and Galloway today. The town was home to Robert Burns but there is far more to see than and do in the "gateway to Scotland". The caul on the river Nith gives the water upstream a millpond like calmness that produces some great reflections as shown.
