Garlieston Caravan Club Site: Village and Harbour Location.

I have to admit, we never stay on these full blown facility sites, preferring the basic 5 unit sites but we had a couple of free nightvouchers and Garlieston was where we wanted to be.

The site is in two sections, the more obvious on the quayside with views across the bay and the other, in a walled garden for those who require more spacious pitches.

We arrived just after midday, the earliest checking in time and managed to grab the last waterfront pitch. We did actually feel a little hemmed in as the motohome next to us was lefthand drive and was parked with their door opening onto our door, so not a lot of privacy when sitting out. Fortunately, those on our other side were on their other side, as it were

The site's location is lovely, on the waterfront next to the harbour and a couple of minut's walk took you to the local village shop and pub.

It was ideal for us as next to the site is a public slipway so we could get our boat out. The down side was we had to carry it from the site and build it by the slipway - hard work!

Excellent facilities, clean heated toilet and shower block, privacy cubicles, dish washing, veg. prep. laundry, information room etc. etc. The wardens were friendly and helpful and usually around if needed.

A fresh fish van calls on a Tuesday evening and proved popular, as we queued with others for our four fresh scallops. By, they were worth having!!

The site cost us (we had an extra night which we paid for) £16.90 a night.

Mossend Caravan Club Certificated Location.: Watch Out For The Lumps and Bumps!!!

We used this site as an overnighter enroute further west into Dumfries and Galloway.

Although the site describes itself as part sloping, it is more uneven ground than anything with lots of humps and bumps. We managed to get level on a huump but when we looked how we were parked, the exhaust was practically on the ground. Be very careful manouvreing, particularly when arriving and leaving!!

It is a pleasant, very rural and quiet site despite being reasonably close to a B road, with some fell views and rolling fields.

We were here towards the end of August and we suffered from midges. I don't think we have encountered midges anywhere else in D.& G.

Also be aware that the water is pumped from a private supply and you are asked not to take more than 25 litres a time, presumably something to do with the pump.

We had to laugh as the caravan nearest us undertook a major spring clean, including hoovering. I guess it was the end of their holiday and rather than clean the van once at home, they opted to get it over and done with!!

£8 a night per unit including electric. We didn't use the hook up as it was a little far away from us.

Upper Dullarg: Off The Beaten Track Certificated Location

We booked this site hoping it was one we had stayed on for a night a few years ago, when it had poured down and although we liked what we saw,we didn't have chance to see it's full potential. Upon arrival, this year, we were pleased to find it was the anticipated site and wow, was it lovely!!It is a huge site with a large flat area on entering and other, hilly, hummocky parts leading up to the farm, all offering lovely views to the distant fells.The farm track is hard so no problems and the field appeared to be well drained, although there had been no rain for weeks. We were amazed there was only one other caravan on. This was half term, school holidays!Where was everyone?

Facilities include water at the farm, a dustbin and a septic tank. A small stream runs through the site which was seriously low on water but was useful for the odd bucket of water.

Be warned, access to this site is not for the faint-hearted. There are three routes in and owing to their narrowness, it would be hard to say which was the best. We were in a motorhome so not too bad to pull into one of the infrequent passing places but towing a caravan?? Probably why we loved the place so much.......

The price for this bliss? £4 a night.

Remoteness, lack of any traffic noise, well off the beaten track, beautiful views, what more can I say??We loved the time we spent here, even finding firewood on site to enable us to have a fire in the BBQ.

Camling, Penpont CL.: Beautiful Location

Having stayed on this site some 15 years ago, we knew what to expect. We were not disappointed, a scenic site, in two parts, on the banks of Scaur Water with the only facilities being a tap and a chemical disposal point. No electricity. Bliss, what more could we want? There was the added bonus of only two other units on the site (maximum of 5 allowed.)

We opted for the first part of the site, where the ground was drier, whereas the further part was rather soggy and from the deep wheel ruts, likely to be a problem getting on and off site.

Just down the road is the village of Penpont, where there is a shop and a pub, which serves good bar meals.

All this for the princely sum of £4.50 a night. (You must be a member of the Caravan and Camping Club.)

Such a peaceful site although it's only just off the A702, you really wouldn't know it. The only sounds we heard were the river thundering past, our neighbour's dogs and the horses in the field behind us.

There is easy access to the river from the site and walk downstream a little way and you come to a gorge where the "black hole" is . This is a favourite spot with fishermen, as the deep water is still here and the fishermen have fixed iron ladders to the rockfaces to gain access to the river. It all looked rather hairy to me, as well as spooky, with the deep, black water. Who knows what lurks beneath??

Although it rained solidly on our last night, the ground had not become too water-logged and we were able to drive off the site without getting bogged in.

Travelodge Dumfries: Scotland's best motel?

Travelodge have built a range of basic motel type accommodation in the UK over the past few years and this is a real basic affair. No telephone connection to reception, no freebies in the bathroom for me to take home!, no iron for all of my clothes, no pics on the wall. In other words nothing that you don't need. I would prefer to stay in a glourious hotel or a friendly B&B but the special offers that you can get at these places are exceptional value. 25% Discount available at Little Chef right outside if you show the key, Brewsters pub/restaurant 1/4 mile away satisfy the need for family dining at breakfast and dinner respectively.

In sum a base and nothing else but then again nothing else matters. Family room big enough for 4 includes ensuite & tv. Customer service very good, value for money exceptional. You need your own transport if staying here as it is situated in the A75 road on the outskirts of the town. If you book with these offers I would be surpirsed if you found even a campsite cheaper from £15 for a family room if you are lucky

"The Knowe": Best choice in Moffat

If You are Looking for a great base then in Dumfries and Galloway then Moffat is an Ideal choice. There are a lot of options for accommodation here but my personal recommendation would be go stay with Christine and Andrew at "The Knowe" This is a Beautiful little B+B on the way into Moffat from the south, It's practically the first house on the right hand side of the road as you approach the town. A Very Friendly welcome, Christine will serve you with a choice of tea or coffee along with some cake and biscuits when you arrive (Include in the price of the B+B) The rooms are very tastefully furnished, Good Hot showers and a great view of the surrounding countryside. Then it's only a 10 minute stroll into the centre of Moffat for your evenings entertainment. The next morning you will be served with a Hearty Scottish breakfast, a choice of cereals and juices followed by bacon, sausage, haggis, eggs (Your choice of scrambled or poached) tomato, mushrooms and as much toast as you can eat + tea or coffee -- This breakfast will Really set you up for the day !!
The prices are Very Reasonable and everything is served with a smile -- Go on, Give them a try, you Won't be disappointed !!
