NEW LANARK MILL HOTEL: Best Factory Accommodations in Scotland

Opened in 1998 on the former site of Mill Number One, the New Lanark Mill Hotel makes a great base for would-be utopian students, travelers to the waist of Scotland - both Edinburgh and Glasgow are short rail journeys away - and naturalists who want to enjoy the beauty of the Falls of the Clyde. The original mill dated to 1785 and boasting three watermills kept some 558 people busy. The top two floors were removed in 1948 and the building eventually became derelict with further time. Eventually the mill was demolished and the hotel was erected on its site.

The hotel exterior architecture is completely in keeping with the other mill buildings and inside you find 38 very comfortable rooms which occupy the upper two of the five floors. Room windows overlook the river. Besides being very comfortable rooms, the showers are amongst some of the most powerful I have ever enjoyed, apropos in a community built upon water power. Breakfast is included in the 54.50 pound tariff and you can add a three course dinner for an extra ten pounds - heartily recommended.

A row of one and two-story buildings lie in front of the hotel and other mill buildings along the river. These have been converted into holiday apartments and are available as the Waterhouses.

New Lanark Mills Youth Hostel

Did not stay here but there is a youth hostel at New Lanark. From the web page:
Grade 1 SYHA.
The 3 star Youth Hostel offers quality budget accommodation in the heart of the village. In this restored millworkers' tenement row packed full of character, there are small comfortable rooms (4 bunks per room)each room with en suite shower and toilet, and stunning views over the river. Great facilities include self-catering kitchen and dining room, TV lounge/recreation room, laundry and internet access.

New Lanark Mill Hotel

Didn't actually stay here, but did go into the lobby area that was very nice. It is a restored mill building that now houses a hotel. It helps support the heritage site.
