On the Old Course
The trip to St. Andrews was a day long bus tour out of Edinburg . I did not even realize I was going to St. Andrews. It was the cheapest and shortest bus tour. The weather was perfect , even with a lot of sunshine.
St. Andrews reads very well in sunny weather.
There is a very well-done mini-museum that leads into the castle grounds and gives you an idea of what you're seeing. The castle is in a state of ruin but enough survives so that you can easily picture how it once looked, and the interpretive signage is excellent.
My favorite aspect of the castle was the mines and counter-mines. Back in the day, some people were trying to break in to the castle and kill the inhabitants by digging a mine. Those inside heard of the plan and began digging a counter-mine to render the invaders' mine useless.
You can go into these mines, but there is a big sign warning, "Enter at your own risk." I see why. The ceilings are only about three feet tall so you have to bend double to travel them. I only made it a few hundred feet before I got claustrophobic and got out.
Back outside, I read that the insiders won, but with little time to spare. You could tell their desperation because their mine was all twisty and small as opposed to the invaders' deep, straight mine.
St Andrews is also blessed with two fabulous beaches, one of which (the west beach) runs north for many miles to the mouth of the Tay, passing the Golf Course, separated by windswept dunes. The East Beach is much smaller - but this leads to the coastal cliff walks, and provides great views back to the ruins of the cathedral and St Rule's.
The Abbot House is known locally as the Pink House for obvious reasons.
The former home of the Abbot was built in the 15th century and was one of the few buildings in town to escape the devastating fire in the 17th Century,
SInce 1995 it has become a heritage centre for the town, and there is also a coffie shop inside.
The Kingdom Fife in Scotland has some of the most picturesque towns and villages to be found.
The East Neuk, or corner, is one of the main attractions of Fife. It is a stretch of coastline dotted with a series of delightful fishing villages, each clustered around its harbour.
