Travel Tips for Saint Andrews

Explore the East Neuk

by mac-me

The East Neuk of Fife has several picturesque fishing villages - Crail, Anstruther, Cellardyke, Pittenweim, St Monance, Elie, Largo. Each pretty little village has its own unique character and each is worth visiting.
Off the coast is the Isle of May that is also worth a trip. It is accessed by boat from Anstruther and is renouned for its seabirds - puffins, kittiwakes, eider ducks, shags - and its grey seals.

TENSTMUIR SANDS

by hevbell

We took a walk here through Tentsmuir forest which borders the beach and along the sands themselves. The deserted beach was where the first scene of the movie, Chariots of Fire was filmed. The coastline includes a national nature reserve and you can spot plenty wildlife in the area, including birds, squirrels, roe deer and rabbits. We spotted some seals not far from the shore (but too far to get a decent photo without a zoom lense..) and frogs etc. A walk through the woods takes you to a couple of ponds and an ice house.

Hill of Tarvit Mansionhouse & Garden

by stevezero

Nestling on a hillside in the Fife countryside, this early 20th-century family home is a gem. The house was remodelled in 1906 by the Scottish architect Sir Robert Lorimer around Mr F B Sharp’s collection of French and Chippendale-style furniture, porcelain and paintings.

Lorimer also designed the gardens, with formal lawns, yew hedging, flowering borders and a sunken rose garden. The walled garden to the north contains sumptuous mixed borders and from here you can follow the paths to the hilltop viewpoint and the wider estate.

Home of my Alma Mater

by morgenhund

"I owe a debt of gratitude to St Andrews University"

I studied at St Andrews University between 1995 and 2000 and value the 8 semesters spent in the East Neuk of Fife as having the most profound effect on my life. During my time there, I met friends with whom I am sure I will maintain contact for the rest of my life, experienced the pure magic of the "Auld Grey Toun" and also picked up a pretty good degree in the process - that's not bad going is it? I hope to return to St Andrews in 2006 for the first time since graduation and to revisit the magical city which was my home as an undergraduate student. Consequently I have focussed a lot on the traditions of student life in my tips.
