Old Course Hotel Golf Resort: Great room - very poor breakfast

The Old Course Hotel adjoins the world famous St Andrews Old Golf course. It was probably built in the 1980's and subsequently extensively extended and modernised since to a high standard. Bedrooms overlook the Old Course or the inland Eden Course (cheaper) and all seem to large and well furnished. Our bedroom, overlooking the Old Course, was extremely comfortable and well fitted. However, the bathroom was small and cramped and not up to the 5-star standard of the rest of the hotel. No separate shower - over bath but a good range of bathroom toileteries was provided. The breakfasts were poor, although a good range of options was provided: the cooking standard was low. Pancakes were returned as inedible, poached eggs were overdone, grilled bacon was greasy etc. (The 3-star Novotel in London's Euston Road provided a far better standard! - we stayed there the previous week!) Lunch and dinner were good. The hotel advertises a swimming pool and spa - but does advertise it costs £20 per room to use it! Reception staff were unhelpful - in fact quite rude, maybe this was because we had got an exceptionally good rate from the hotel's web site rather than pay +50% rack rate.
If cost is not an option it is a good place to stay. The buildings and rooms (excluding the bathrooms) warrant its 5 star rating - let down by (some) staff. (An enterprising training company should try to sell some Customer Care courses to the front desk staff!)
A unique location right alongside the famous Old Course at the home of golf would make this a 'must stay place' for any well heeled golfer and partner.
