Playing Golf in St. Andrews
by Maria81
The Courses of St. Andrews:
There are 7 golf courses, all managed by the Links Trust:
- The Old course
- The Castle Course
- The New Course
- The Jubilee Course
- The Eden Course
- The Strathryrum Course
- The Balgrove Course
Booking the Tee Time:
First of all, a handicap is needed for the Old Course (which is 24 for men and 36 for women). - some others (e.g., Castle Course are accessible without the official handicap). But we want the Old Course, right?
If you're able to plan far ahead or are quite flexible with your work, you can apply for the following year each September for advance reservations. For those lucky, there is a daily ballot, and single golfers can also try their luck with the starter to see if there are any slots within groups scheduled to go out.
For certainty, there is always the Old Course Experience that guarantees a tee time.
Mine under St. Andrews Castle
by saraheg77
When visiting St. Andrews, be sure to visit the castle and this mine that is underneath it. It was fun to explore, but we did get a little dirty :) There are a couple of ladders to climb and slippery places inside the mine, so be careful.
St Andrews Sarcophagos
by stevezero
Your admission ticket for the cathedral also includes admission to the museum in the catedral grounds. Here you can view various stones including the famous St Andrews Sarcophagos, perhaps the
finest example of Pictish carving in existence.

"Old Course - Swilcan Bridge"
The world famous Swilcan Bridge on the Old Course - One must cross the bridge after teeing off on number 18 and approaching the fairway on the way to the green. It is a tradition that many golfer who have this on their bucket list, pose for a most memorable photo.

"THE HOME OF GOLF"
$s4 Not everything on this page is in St Andrews but we were based there on a trip in 1993 so its all fairly close by.
The photo above is of the world famous Old Course at St Andrews, the home of golf. Golf was pioneered here on the sandy links, with earliest records dating from 1457, so its now a bit of a shrine for golfers.
We were staying only a few miles from this lovely town. Although it is a bit golf obsessed there, its also home to Scotlands oldest University (now attended by Prince William) and the ruins of the 12th century cathedral, St Andrews at one time having been the ecclesiastical capital of Scotland. Its a good place to base yourself in order to explore the area.
