Travel Tips for Saint Andrews

The Lammas Fair

by Redang

The Lammas Fair takes place every August and finishes on he second Tuesday of the month. Market Street, Thursday and Friday; South Street, Monday (what I saw) and Tuesday.

This tradition dates back to 1.620.

PS: I got the information some two months after my visit thanks to Maureen Milne, Visitor Services Assistant, St Andrews Tourist Centre, and I consider of interest to add it.

KELLIE CASTLE

by hevbell

A National Trust property near Pittenweem. Its got gorgeous gardens and you can go inside the castle too. My favourite part was, I seem to remember, the nursery. The first part of the castle was built in the 13th Century and extensions were added at various points in its history.

HILL OF TARVIT

by hevbell

An Edwardian mansion designed by Sir Robert Lorimer for F.B. Sharp who wanted the house to be a good backdrop for his works of art. There are tapestries, French and English furniture, Chinese porcelain and paintings by the likes of Ramsay and Raeburn. The house is now owned and maintained by the National Trust for Scotland. Once you've seen the house you can take a walk through the wood and up the hill to a toposcope.

Aberdour Castle

by stevezero

Aberdour Castle can claim to be one of the oldest fortified residences in Scotland. The frist castle, a wooden motte was erected in the 12th Century. This was replaced by a stone keep in 1240 which gaurded the shores of the River Forth.
It has since beeen greatly extended over the centuries.

Golf Mecca

by Canadian_girl

Too bad I don't play golf... but my brother, who is obsessed with it, certainly seemed to like his postcard from the holy land...
I, on the other hand, liked randomly stumbling upon the ruins of a monastery while walking down a side street.
