Travel Tips for Aberdeen

Most of the time it is cold...

by AC1

As the weather changes very rapidly here, it is always advisable to have a jacket somewhere close even during summer. The wind can be very chilly during winter and thick clothing is definitely a must.

Take to the sea.

by jio

Take to the sea. There's a distant ethereal island that celebrating its 6th millennia out there. No need to bribe a captain or a pirate. Take the overnight boat from Aberdeen to Orkney Island. Isolation awaits.

Get there by train (can be...

by katiejt

Get there by train (can be expensive) or bus (slightly cheaper) from around the UK. Or you can fly. EasyJet do great deals from London to Aberdeen, or Ryanair fly London-Glasgow Prestwick - but then you have to get into Glasgow to get a connecting train or bus.
Buses in Aberdeen are not cheap. Unfortunately, there are no suburban trains or underground, so you're left with no choice really. Having said that, you can easily walk around the centre of the city as it's not that big. If you get the bus, you can buy an all day ticket for £3, so if you're going to be travelling around a bit then it's worth buying that. Otherwise it's about £1.70 for a return ticket.......

Southern Italian delight

by TracyG about Rustico

This is a family run restaurant and often ranks as one of the best in Aberdeen. The food is very typical of Southern Italy and the Mediterranean region and the portions are very generaous - maybe too generous, I have never once finished all of my main course! It is a very cosy restaurant and nearly every night is fully booked so book in advance. Monkfish and king prawn skewers on linguine with basil and chilli. Also the nightly specials as they are often amazing.

Cruickshank Botanic Garden

by tini58de

This beautiful botanical garden is part of the university and is open mondays to fridays 9 - 5. It has a rose garden, alpines, shrugs, rock and water gardens and we mostly enjoyed how natural it all looked - a true oasis!
