Travel Tips for Aberdeen

Pack for 'all' weathers...

by TracyG

Anything goes really. As long as you can carry it, whatever you have to hand should do the trick. If here in the winter time, definately bring lots of warm layers, and a big top coat and you gloves, scarf etc. It is not until about May that it gets warm enough to go out without a jacket. So throughout spring and summer bring a lighter jacket and whatever you would wear for elsewhere in the UK.
Don't forget good sturdy boots if you want to go hiking. Nothing will be needed, whatever you do need you will have no problem buying. Again you will have no problems in finding anything, but bear in mind that at certain tourist destinations the price of film can be a lot higher than in the city centre.

My Favourite Part of the Village

by scottishvisitor

I love this part of my home village although still in Cruden Bay it is also known by its much older name of Port Erroll. The houses run along one side of the street with their gardens positioned accross the road, there is no room for gardens to the rear of the properties, here you will find more cute cottages set in tiny uphill streets. Being a keen gardener myself I like to take an interest in other peoples gardens, the ones in the pictures are probably my favourites. There are no harsh colours here, houses are mostly subtle pale colours and the gardens mostly have a seafairing theme. My favourite house here is the first one in my pictures, called the Lang Hoose but unfortunately for me it isn't up for sale!

Excellent Turkish food

by AC1 about Rendezvous @ Nargile

This is one of the best restaurant in Aberdeen city area. If you are thinking that Turkish food is just another kebab shop, well you will be pleasantly surprise with Nargile. Not only that it serves very good food, the environment is of very posh settings, modern, romantic fine dining.

The price is reasonably fair for that kind of quality and settings. Definitely worth a visit if you have around 20 quids to spare per person for dinner. Ask the staffs to recommend what is fresh from the sea today.

Aberdeen Maritime Museum

by ringleader

The museum is a five-star award-winning museum which tells the story of the city's long relationship with the Sea. This museum has a unique collection covering subjects of shipbuilding, fast sailing ships, fishing and port history, and is the only place in the UK where you can see displays on the North Sea oil industry.

The best part of it is that the admission is FREE!

Provost Ross House

by uglyscot

This building, now owned by the National trust is the second oldest house in Aberdeen. It is named after Provost John Ross who was Lord Provost of Aberdeen 1710- 1712.
The house was built in 1593. It still has many of the original features eg fireplace.
In the 1960s it was used by the British Council, and I remember attending dances, lectures and a children's Christmas party there.
I also took my 5th year class to visit it as part of a History of Aberdeen element.
