Aberdeen for the summer

by jaydigity

Myself and a couple of friends are thinking of working for the summer in Britain. There're a few cities we are considering going to and to help us narrow our (very long) list I was just wondering if anyone would like to offer some input as to whether or not Liverpool would be a good choice for the summer.
We'd be looking for somewhere where
- Job availibility won't be a problem
- A decent nightlife for 20 year olds
- Cheap cost of living, or at least, not expensive
- There's a nice amount of touristy things to do.

Really, REALLY appreciate feedback!

I see you have asked the same question in a few cities. Cheap? You know the answer already. Aberdeen is nice, but will not match your expectations unless you like a town you can master in 1 day. Liverpool or Manchester will do it for you. They almost overlap each other. Lots of student accomodation.

All the best,

DAO

Cheers for that, yeah aberdeen does seem too small really, about the same size as the city I live in at home, think I probably want more of a challenge.
Thanks!

You are welcome, that's what we are here for.

Travel Tips for Aberdeen

Visit Dunnottar Castle at...

by Gypsyjuliet

Visit Dunnottar Castle at Stonehaven, just outside Aberdeen - it reminds me of Tintagel in Cornwall and is quite dramatic!. The quaint sea-front cafes (some of which need a good lick of paint) have such a heart that modernisation would be a crime. Visit the Canale-Parola family's Washington Cafe where they still hand-make their own delicious icecream. You can sit on bench seats and eat from 1950's ice cream bowls if you ask nicely!

Linx Ice Arena

by iaint

Another b....y ice rink?

Well, no actually. Out of all the ice hockey venues I get to visit (rink rat is the technical description) during the season, this is one of the best.

Why? Well its modern and well maintained. It has heating and clean toilets with modest luxuries like toilet paper and hand dryers! It is next to a swimming pool, so you can use both if you want. It is on the beach, so you can go for a walk and recover from the 2 hour journey to get there. Nearby you have the funfair, cinema + restaurant complex with lots of things to keep kids happy. You have a golf range next door, and Pittodrie Stadium (home of Aberdeen soccer club - but watch out for congestion on match days)

Downside - like most ice rinks, the bar and cafe close when the ice hockey starts and you have to survive on what the vending machines serve up. Warm clothing if spectating - its not that well heated!
Loose change for vending machines!
If you want to skate you can hire the skates.

Rocky Headlands & Marshy Medows

by scottishvisitor

I often walk on Ward Hill with my dog, to see the cliffs rise from the sea, watch the seas energy as it crashes on the rocks, to feel and taste the salt water on my face as it is carried through the air by strong sea breezes, definately a place to wake me up. The walk can take a long time, as you stop many times to ponder nature and the sounds and sights of the sea. Ward Hill is marshy moorland and I often spot grouse here when Shannon startles them from there hiding places in the grass marshes. In Spring time wild flowers bloom on the hill and on the rocks and cliffs, my favourites are the Sea Pinks. A good place to walk and unwind.

My favorite restaurant must be...

by inger.

My favorite restaurant must be restaurant yu, at unionstreet. It is a chinees restaurant, not cheap, but the best food ever, great service, and the person who makes all the decorations for the food is a genius.
It is a fairly expensive restaurant compared to the other places, but if you have anything to celebrate or you just want an excellent meal, go to Yu's.

Crathes Castle

by SallyM

Crathes Castle is about 45 minutes' drive away from Aberdeen. Now owned by the National Trust for Scotland, it was the home of the Burnett family.

The Burnetts were given a horn by Robert the Bruce in the early 14th century. What purports to be the original horn can be seen above the fireplace, but the horn motif appears frequently in the castle. The nucleus of the castle is a tower house, which is noted as a fine example of Scottish baronial architecture. The painted ceilings are particularly interesting. The spiral stone stairs are quite narrow and steep.

As well as the castle itself, there are very beautiful gardens, and woodland walks on the estate. For the very adventurous, there is 'Skytrek' - a series of high level rope bridges.

There is also a self-service restaurant and a shop. In addition, there is a table-service restaurant, The Horsemill, but that was closed for refurbishment when I visited.

Crathes Castle makes a good day out combined with nearby Drum Castle.
