living in aberdeen

by pierrenickie

Hi guyz!

my friend and i plan to pursue our study at Aberdeen University.
My friend will be doing his phd in march 2007 and i'll be doing my Msc in late 2007...

If anyone can share their views on how is life in aberdeen (i.e. cost of living) and how to travel to aberdeen from london?

Thanks!

You can fly from London Heathrow with BMI or BMIbaby (budget carriers) or from London Luton with Easyjet (ditto). www.flybmi.com www.bmibaby.com www.easyjet.com Booking early will get you the cheapest flights, but the check-in times are v strict indeed, as are the luggage allowances. British airways also fly from London Gatwick and Heathrow.

Train timetables and fares are on www. nationalrail.co.uk.

You could get a coach (www.nationalexpress.com) but it takes around 12 hours.

http://www.abdn.ac.uk/prospectus/pgrad/general/travel.shtml gives you extra details.

The cost of living is high everywhere in the UK, even higher in London. I don't think Aberdeen is any cheaper than any comparable UK city.

Travel Tips for Aberdeen

Stunning Architecture...

by TracyG

Definately take a walk around King's Colege. This is where I mainly studied, and it is a brilliant place - if the weather is right - to explore, there is a small visitors centre and a brilliant coffee shop which can give you advice and maps etc. Has to be the endless picnics (and drinking sessions!) that we used to have on the beach - yes Aberdeen does get some sunny and warm weather too....

Skiing is near by..

by TracyG

Aberdeen is conveniently located to several ski centres, the closest being Glenshee which is only about an hours drive away. The other major one is The Lecht which is just over an hours drive away and of course Cairngorm. Glenshee has the most extensive facilities, and Cairngorm is the most well known but the Lecht is a lot smaller and friendly. All three of the above ski resorts have facilities for hiring of boots, skis and boards, so if you don't have your own there is no problem.

Seabirds abound at the Bullers of Buchan

by scottishvisitor

The Bullers of Buchan has great headland walks. All sorts of seabirds can be found nesting high on the sea cliffs.
Excellent coastal wild flowers perfume the air as you sit and listen to the mournful cry of the gulls.
If you are very lucky you might spot a puffin or two. I often come here but without my dog the headland and cliffs have sheer drops but the beauty is drop dead gorgeous

Dine in an Old Mill

by scottishvisitor about Mill of Mundurno

Pleasant family restaurant with old world charm. An out of town location incorporating motel style accommodation. The restaurant caters well for children with special menus & kids drinks & provides a safe & fun outdoor playarea. We usually stop here when shopping in Aberdeen on our way home. The food is good traditional stuff, but they have many specials, I sometimes have the tandoori chicken with mango chutney. Please note : check your table number & order & pay at the bar

University of Aberdeen- King's College

by muse_chik

Gorgeous Campus- beautiful ivy covered buildings and quaint cobblestone streets.

The University has a wonderful academic air to it- one that you don't get very often at American institutes of higher education...
