Travel Tips for Aberdeen

If you want an education -

by scottishvisitor

Aberdeen, as a university city has many campuses spread throughout the city. Robert Gordon University or to use its local name RGU has its campus on the aptly named Schoolhill.
On this campus you will find the Students' Union & the International Office ( where overseas students receive help in settling in, grants & language help.
The students study in the School of Pharmacy & School of Engineering.

Bullers Of Buchan

by stevezero

The Bullers Of Buchan is an amazing natural phenomonem. It is a huge hole surrounded by 65m high clifffs. It was once a cave whose roof fell in, leaving the features as seen today.
You can walk right around the feature, but extreme care is needed as there are no fences and huge drops into the sea below.
The is also a great walk along the red cliffs nearby, whith equally long falls for the unweary.

Located just off the A90 between Cruden Bay and Peterhead.

One to give a miss

by Kevross85 about The priory

The priory used to be a nice place to go to but now it should be avoided. The first problem is that it is full of "neds" which is never a good thing, as nine out of ten nights you will see a fight. Then there is the fact it feels like it has never been cleaned and you end up sticking to the floor.

One of the few good things I can say about it is that it is one of the few bars in aberdeen that serve "Purple Rain" cocktails so if you wanna get drunk try one of these.

Overall I'd say give it a miss and try somewhere else as there is enough options in aberdeen They let you in wearing pretty much anything

Great Pub, Great Location and Pretty Good Food Too

by saracen about The Monkey House

Located in a former very grand banking institution in a prime area of Aberdeen's Union Street, the interior of this pub/restaurant has been very tastefully designed around the original marble features, including the tall columns up to the very high vaulted ceiling and the wood panelling.

The pub is generally busy without being roudy, and the dining area is separate from the drinking action.

The menu is typical UK pub grub - wraps, steak pie, burgers etc. All the portions are very generous and the service is friendly and informal. The burgers are always very satisfying and tasty, with a mountain of great, homemade chips. Last time, I had a really good steak and ale pie with potatoes and veg, all very well prepared.

Dunnottar Castle

by stevezero

Dunnattor Castle, near Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire is everyones idea of a proper castle. It is probably the most impregnable fortress in Scotland.
The castle stands on a remote headland surrounded by 50m high cliffs, as if it were indeed designed for the castle itself. The flat ground on which the castle stands, of some three acres, was once connected to the mainland by a saddle, but even this has been carved away by man.
There were only two ways in or out of Dunnottar Castle. The first was via the incredibly strongly defended main gate set in a cleft in the rock where unwanted callers would be vulnerable to attack from all sides. The second was via a rocky creek leading to a cave on the north side of the rock. From here a steep path led up the cliff to the well defended postern gate.
There has been a defensive structure on the site since 900 AD. The present structure dates to 1500's.

Admission: Adult £3.50, Child £1.00.
