Travel Tips for Aberdeen

In Ballater there is the most...

by globetrott

In Ballater there is the most famous Highland Game in Scotland - and mostly even the Queen and her family will be umong the visitors.

Check out for the date - it is August or september

...and I could imagine, there will be plenty of security people and you could not get so close to the games to take pics like I did .

How time can change things for the better

by scottishvisitor

When we first moved to the village of Cruden Bay the area behind our street was home to a brick making factory known as Cruden Bay Brick & Tile Company. There was a huge brick chimney and red brick buildings scarred the landscape around here. This closed down completely around twenty years ago. The deep clay pits which were left behind have over time collected enough rain water to produce a beautiful little loch complete with a sweet island in the middle - a perfect habitat for ducks and swans. Here you can walk amongst the many wildflowers through long grass (there are no paths) till your hearts content. Local plans are for more housing here - but some one is already in residence - a badgers set has been located - this is a protected animal here in Scotland so hopefully the badger will stay and no houses will appear here to spoil the tranquility.

Well, I'm not really sure...

Well, I'm not really sure whether to reccommend it or not.......but Amadeus is such a student club, it really has to be mentioned.
I've heard it called 'Ama-desparate?' because of the meat-market atmosphere. It's not exactly a classy kind of place, but if you live in Aberdeen for any length of time and go out at night, you'll probably end up here one of those days whether you want to or not.... Monday nights are cheesy student nights (called Taste), and the music's sometimes quite good. If you just want a good laugh, this is the place for you.
If you want cheap drinks, buy before midnight, as all drinks are 99p (yes, really!) - they get pretty expensive after that.

You Pays Your money

by saracen about Jimmy Chung's Chinese Bar and Buffet

A very open bar upstairs and larger restaurant downstairs. The decor is simple but not particularly Chinese in style. The service when we arrived was friendly and efficient.

Basically, you give your drinks order and are then unleashed on the buffet. It consists of 2 large food islands, everything kept warm with hot lamps. There is one island with loads of starters, one with main courses and a counter with desserts.

The choices are wide and varied, with all the regular UK Chinese restaurant favourites. Unfortunately when we went, the restaurant was pretty quiet so the turnover of food was slow and the majority was tough, dry and chewy. Nothing really struck me as being tasty or worth the money. I doubt I would eagerly return.

Balmedie is a village some 8kms north of Aberdeen City.
Ther is a pleasant country park, with a boardwak that takes you through the dunes to a nice beach.
Unfortunately on the day we were there it was blowing a gale.
