Train to Edinburgh

by diamond_skies

My boss has asked me to book flights for her between Belfast and Aberdeen. She can get there ok but coming back the only flight available is too early for her. She is thinking of going to Edinburgh to fly from there. How easy is it to get a train from Aberdeen to Edinburgh? How long of a journey is it?

Many thanks

Jane

www.edinburghguide.com/travel/transport/train.htm and browse through the various links.
www.travelinescotland.com is an excellent site for travel planning.

One thing to remember is that Edinburgh has two stations - the first one you come to is Haymarket and this is the best stop for the airport bus - there's a bus that goes every 15 minutes or so, costs about £3 single or £5 return (not exactly sure but it's within those figures). Doesn't matter if you go on to Waverley Station but it means you are backtracking to get to the airport.

Thanks lads. I wasn't sure if the train journey might be too long but at least it gives her the option.

Travel Tips for Aberdeen

Take a trip to Balmoral Castle. There are some great walks around here, and good fishing (if that is your thing) the countryside around here really is fantastic and it is all only about 2hrs drive from Aberdeen. I miss the friends that I have made during my time at University, many of them have now moved on elsewhere through work, but we still all keep in touch...

Have lunch at Crathes Castle

by Stargazer1

Crathes Castle is just outside Aberdeen (west, I believe). The owner and his wife run the place, and their two daughters are waitresses in the restaurant. I had an excellent lunch there, served by one of the pretty daughters. She told me a bit about the famous ghosts that supposedly haunt the place. More can be found here:

The enclosed gardens are very nice.

To get there, take the A93 from Aberdeen, heading towards Banchory.

Look for these wonderful small houses, called 'Fitties'.

They used to be sailor's and captain's homes in the 19th century - now they are summer-houses and some are also used as a shed.

There are a lot more pics of the Fitties here under 'Off the beaten Path' !

This clean and airy restaurant is linked to the Aberdeen homeles project so some money goes to a worthwhile cause. The premises also double as a small art gallery. The menu changes all the time and is really different but the goats cheese on apricot cous cous is a winner!

St Machar's Cathedral

by iaint

This is a Church of Scotland building, but of course any flavour of visitor is welcome.

One of its main features is the coats-of-arms on the celing, dating from 1520 (or thereby). Claims to be one of the best in Europe.

There has been a church here since 580...
