Moving to Aberdeen 2006

by waltham

My family and I are moving with my husband's job to Aberdeen in summer 2006. I wondered if anyone out there could recommend a good butchers and whether the fish market at Aberdeen harbour I have heard about is open to the general public or just trade, and whether anyone knows of any other good food shops in the area.

Many thanks

The following farm shop is one of the best!! I have not been to the one in Aberdeen, which is located north of Aberdeen but the Edinburgh shop is great for all farm products.

Travel Tips for Aberdeen

Home to a population of...

by scotty1

Home to a population of 211,250, Aberdeen is a thriving, cosmopolitan port in the North-east of Scotland.Built at the mouth of two major Scottish rivers, the Dee and the Don. The Granite City owes its distinctive appearance to the famous, locally quarried and widely exported, building material. Traditional industries such as fishing and farming still flourish in and around the city but Aberdeen's buoyant modern economy - reflected in unemployment rates consistently under 2% - is fuelled by the oil industry, earning the city a new epithet as 'Oil Capital of Europe'.With bustling shopping malls, a wide variety of entertainment and leisure amenities, and a vibrant arts scene, Aberdeen is a major retail, leisure and cultural centre. First class road, rail, sea and air communications . I live here so I have many fond memories. Mostly I like long slow walks with my dog along the river , down at the beach or through the parks.

Catch a game of Cricket

by scottishvisitor

In Summer you can watch a game of cricket being played at Duthie Park, the Aberdeen University has a team called the Bon Accord Cricket Club and were Scottish Universities first Xl champions in 2006. They play at all levels and abilities. So if you want to know the score = see a cricket match.

Speedwells spread their blue carpet

by scottishvisitor

The woods are often very wet & muddy with only a narrow walking path used by horse riders & dog walkers like me. Fortunately for Mother Nature most people stick to the path (except my dog - she doesn't know the country code!) so the wild flowers are left to show off in peace.

Food and Football

by Sharna. about Chicago Rock

Chicago Rock is a very popular restaurant and bar in Aberdeen. More so when they play the football on the big screen. When the play the big games its a high energy, fun atmosphere. A great place to be.

As a dining restaurant I can reccommend the food but unfortunately not the service. Hopefully it has improved by now, but in case it hasn't, make sure you tell them your in a hurry and you might recieve your meals in an acceptable time frame. Aberdeen Angus Pie,
I miss my Aussie meat pies and this is the closest thing Ive been able to find in over a year!

St. Machar Cathedral

by foxie

One of the great churches inside and out, and there's only a few in Aberdeen you can say that about.

Unlike the rest of Aberdeen, St. Machar's is built not from the slate grey stones of the rest of the city, but a destinctive rosy brown. It sits just behind the University of Aberdeen campus and through some beautiful gardens.

St. Machar's boasts not only age, but a very well put together guide sheet and a very helpful guide person to show you around the relatively small cathedral. I highly reccomend catching a service as the accoustics are beautiful. Also, wander through the cemetary for a great local history lesson.
