Sango Sands Caravan and Camping Site: Nicely Located

Another site we had originally intended staying on but didn't, in the end. It was only halfwy through the day by the time we got to Durness, so we carried on, after having a look at the site and nearby Balnakeil.

The site is beautifully located, above spectacular Sango beach, with easy access from the site. I believe there are around 80 pitches on 10.5 acres of level grass and hardstanding. Plenty of room and no uniform rows of caravans here. It appeared our sort of site, where pitching was wherever you wanted, and not regimented. Unforunately, the wind was blowing fiercely whilst we were in Durness and somehow, the place lost some of it's appeal!

Had we needed a site, ie; needed to empty the toilet and fill up with water, I'm sure we would have stayed, especially if the weather had been better.

Open April - Oct. Bookings only taken for electric hook-ups.

Unique Quality: Surely it's location!

Also close to the village's facilities.

Ard Neakie: Camping Wild On Loch Eriboll

We were hoping to stay somewhere on Loch Eriboll and I had read about Ard Neakie and seen photos of the place. It looked ideal for us, having a boat we had a choice of two beaches to launch from here.

The track to the place was gated but not locked. Ummm, do we go through or not? Then we spotted two static caravans with people outside. We drove down and asked if they thought we'd be ok to stay the night. Apparently the landowner lived further down the loch and could be a bit of a character at times. They told us that it was unlikely he would object but if he turned funny, obviously we would have to leave. No problems, naturally we wouldn't want to upset anyone and if asked to leave, of course we would. We took our chances and weren't visited by the landlord, although a local family came to visit and were sooo friendly and told us if we had any problems to go and see them. They even invited us for a drink and to use their jetty.

Unique Quality: We launched our boat and caught a couple of mackerel. In the evening we had a fire on the beach, cooked our fish and enjoyed our beautiful srroundings. I also explored the lime kilns and quarry and had a walk over the "island."Somehow, we never got to visit our new friends for a drink, we had intended staying two nights but the next day, the weather turned and the sea was too rough for our boat so we decided to have a morning out on the motorbike and visit inland Loch Hope. When we returned,it was still quite wild, so we packed up and left our fantastic wild camp.

As we drove round the loch, we realised how lucky we had been to camp there, as there wasn't another decent spot by the loch that we could have stopped at.

YHA Durness: YHA comes up trumps again!

The Youth hostel consists of two wooden huts seperated by a lawn with a view across the sea. The accomodation is fairly basic but comfortable enough, the atmosphere laid back, and the drunken village idiot shouting obscenities outside provided excellent entertainment.

Unique Quality: Fine location with sea views and the Smoo cave nearby.
