Travel Tips for Fort William

by Andrew_Vodo

Most of the people that go to Fort William go there to see the Highlands nature. Lakes, valleys, forests, mountains. The nature is very beautiful, specially designed for those who are tired of modern cities :)))

Loch Shiel

by sim1

This is the view you have at the Glenfinnan Monument on Loch Shiel. It was such a perfect day to see Loch Shiel. What a wonderful light, so strange, but so amazing. The mist is hanging over the lake, the sun is shining brightly and trying to get through the mist. A view I will never forget, this for me is Scotland in the winter.

It was -20 outside, and my toes felt like they were freezing off. But this view, oooh, I just couldn't get enough of it! I could stare at it for hours, but I was dragged back to the car after a while. Hahaha, not everyone wanted to stand here for hours, because their feet where getting too cold :-)

Lochaber Schools Pipe Band

by himalia11

Each Tuesday and Thursday in summer, the Lochaber Schools Pipe Band is playing at the Cameron Place, in front of the Tourist Information. They start at around 19:30 and will play for about 1 hour. We had to wait until 19:45 until they came, but you heard them already from far, coming down the High Street. They played several pieces that were announced. It was very nice – and loud! The band consists of school children and interestingly the ones that played when we've been there were mainly women. The performance is free but someone is walking around to get some donations for their equipment.

High Street

by stevezero

The High Street has a reasonable range of shops, and outdoor enthusiasts are especially well catered for by large outlets at either end of the underpass leading to the railway station. The area is pedestrianised so you don't have to worry abot the traffic.

The remainders of the fort

by himalia11

If you hear the town's name, you probably will expect to find a fort there. There indeed once was one, but when the first railway line was build it was destroyed. The fort was named after William of Orange (William II), and the village around was called "Maryburgh", after the name of William's wife. The name of the town changed some more times until it eventually was called Fort William.
You can easily overlook the remainders of the fort as there's almost nothing left, just some walls. However this is nice green area near the loch!
