Travel Tips for Fort William

Stalker Castle

by sim1

What a wonderful day! It seemed like the perfect day to go out and drive along the westcoast of Scotland. It looked so gorgeous, all that snow, the beautiful lakes and mountains with fairytale like castles.

And isn't this a beautiful castle! It is Stalker castle, but unfortunately it was closed because it was winter. I would have loved to take a look at it, it looked so beautiful in the water. As I haven't been here, I don't know very much about this castle. But there is lots of information on the castle on this website :

Next time I have to go to Scotland in the summer, so I can take a look at the inside of all these beautiful castles..... Hmmmm, what a great excuse to go back here again :-)

Watching the sunset

by sim1

Staring at the sunset, sitting on the ledge, overlooking the water. Sigh... wish I was there again. The day is at an end, it is time to go back to the cottage. Tomorrow we are leaving Scotland. But this has been a trip I will never forget.

The Aonach Eagach

by Charlie_UK

Just south of Fort William lies Glencoe, a valley famous both for its scenery and the famous massacre of the Campbells by the Macdonalds, which has caused a festering rivalry in the catering business through their rival tinned food / burger chain catering empires.

Two Munros, Meall Dearg and Sgorr nam Fiannaidh, are linked by the notorious Aonach Eagach ridge, a tricky and quite technical scramble, with fierce exposure and head-spinning drops, especially if you don't have a head for heights - like me.

Glen Coe

by CandS

Glen Coe is an absolutely beautiful area of Scotland...definitely a must see if you get the chance!!! :) It would be great to see it on a clear day (if that's possible?) so if you have a few days to spare, pick the best day.

Nevis Range

by himalia11

The Nevis Range is a bit north of Fort William. In the winter you have here a ski area and in the summer you can take a trip with the gondola half way up to the mountain of Aonach Mor. The gondolas look very small, but I've read that that they can carry up to 6 persons. At the top gondola station there's a restaurant and you’ve some possibilities to walk and enjoy the view. I guess with the right weather (and if you are not afraid of gondolas like me) this must be very nice!
The gondola is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00 (longer in July & August).
