Which Fort?
by Sileas
The name of Fort William suggests that it used to be the site of a garrison - which is right. In fact the whole town was founded around the old fort - still today Fort William's gaelic name is An Ghearasdan - the Fort, although an older village, Maryburgh, was close.
The old Fort, build in 1654 to accomodate Oliver Cromwell's soldiers, however, has been demolished in the late 19th century to make way for a new train station, which has been demolished as well some decades later. There are still a few remains to be seen at the Lochside. The old Fort also marks the beginning of the great Glen Way.
The sunset
by sim1
The day is getting to an end, and we are back in Fort William. It has been a very cold winter day. The temperatures were -20 degrees celcius, no fun to hang around outside for a long time! That evening we were rushing to go to a restaurant in downtown Fort William as we saw this magnificent sunset. Who cares about the cold.... we just stopped in the middle of town and watched the sun go down.
St. Conans Kirk

We came across this place on the drive between Loch Lomond and Fort William in Loch Awe and stopped there because we had some time and it looked interesting (always the best way to see things). It is a 19th century church located right on the loch with a rather Gothic feel to it. The location is absolutely gorgeous. It is also very quiet--no one is at the door so you get in for a donation and can also get a printed guide.
Ben Nevis

Despite what the taxi-driver said, deep down in my heart, I refused to believe that this was where the film “Brave heart” was shot. He even pointed to me the exact location where the houses were built, battle fought, etc… As we wondered further up, we came to a waterfall and it seems too weird that it was “hidden” at a deserted area…. We could see people jumping into the fall….at this cold weather!!!
Neptune's Staircase

Neptune's Staircase is a series of 8 locks which links Loch Linnhe with the Caledonian Canal. It lifts boats about 20 meters over a distance of 500 meters. I think it takes some time until you've passed all the locks with the boat!
There's also a path on both sides of the canal and a tunnel under the canal so that you can do a nice circular walk which takes about 1 hour. If you start at the right side of the canal in direction north, watch for the power line on the right. After it, there's a path with a gate that goes down to the tunnel. Take the left tunnel, the other one is much more wet!
