More about West End

A bonnie hotel in the highlands

by pilgrim55 about West End Hotel, Fort William, Scotland

The West End Hotel is located right on Loch Linnhe on the outskirts of Fort William. One can see Ben Nevis on a clear day (if there is one) nearby.
We had a spacious room with a lovely bathroom and all the conveniences. We almost felt we were back in the states. Every night we had a sumptuous meal with the other folks on our Wallace Arnold tour, who were all Brits and people from Wales.
There was also entertainment several nights in the bar and lounge after dinner -- featuring local Scottish talent.

Lodging

We are planning on being in Fort William, Highlands, Scotland, area for 2 days and would appreciate suggestions for 1) lodging and 2) how to structure our time. My husband is a good photographer and is interested in the best places to take pictures. Thanks!

Hi,
We where in Fort William in May of this year.
We where with some friends who where downhill mountain biking on the world cup downhill course there (photo opportunity!)
We walked up Ben Nevis which is the highest mountain in Britain and has some amazing views on the way up.-5 on the summit though!
There is a Gondola which serves the downhill course if your not into walking/climbing.Plenty of reasonably priced hotels in the area.

Hi there,
I am a keen photographer as well and some of the best photos I have from Scotland were taken in Glencoe which is approx.15 miles south of Fort William.
The scenery and the wildlife are excellent.
There is a nice Inn called The Clachaig nestling in the heart of Glencoe, excellent accommodation and food at a reasonable price, see website www.clachaig.com
Glencoe village nice as well.
Hope you have a nice time

Travel Tips for Fort William

Merry Christmas!

by sim1

I was here during the Christmas holidays. for me that was a wonderful time to be here, but it has some disadvantages. The castles are closed, and so are the whiskey distilleries. During Christmas itself it was hard to find a restaurant that was open. So bear this in mind when you go here in this period. But the advantage is, that there are not a lot of tourists around. You can see the nature in it's true beauty, without being disturbed by all the tourists.

Peat Track

by Sileas

The peat track ia a rather unknown path from Glen Nevis to Fort William. It is really steep at it's Glen Nevis end so be prepared. But the hassle is well worth it: once you are up there you get the most stunning views you can imagine!

It is really to recommend when the snow has come or at sunset as you can see the sun go down above Loch Linnhe!

Loch Ness

by vichatherly

A beautiful place to relax and try and spot Nessie.

Loch Ness is undeniably one of the most famous lakes in the world. It is also, certainly, a place of outstanding natural beauty, but it has to be admitted that the world wide fame of Loch Ness owes more to the legend of its famous occupant, the Loch Ness Monster - or 'Nessie'

Glenfinnan Viaduct

by vichatherly

A must for any Harry Potter fans out there.

The second Harry Potter film , The Chamber of Secrets featured Fort William, Glenfinnan Viaduct and the famous West Highland Railway Line.

The Glenfinnan Viaduct is 416 yards long and made up of 21 arches, the tallest of which is 100ft high. What is less obvious from a distance is that the viaduct is also curved, leading the track round the head of the River Finnan valley.
