Beach Side: Camping On The Shore At Melvaig
In Melvaig,a local man, originally from Lancaster, told us we would be fine camping on the beach at Melvaig. We had already looked at the place and thought we would be intrusive as there was a house on the beach. No problems, they wouldn't mind and anyway, they were away. So, we camped down by the old jetty on the beach, knowing we were welcome and there would be no problems.
It was a great spot with views across the sea to the northern end of Skye and we could even see the Outer Hebrides, until the weather closed in. We were amazed how close they looked. Nick had a go at fishing when with great excitement, we saw the water "boiling" in front of us. A huge shoal of fish were leaping frenziedly in the water and this happened a few times. It was quite spectacular watching the surface of the water change consistency. Alas, Nick caught nothing, but later, a family came down and a young lad of 9 caught his first ever fish. He was, naturally, over the moon and well and truly hooked!! Later still, a couple of young men came to try their hand but had no luck at all.
That evening we were joined by a French family, in a large motorhome, who asked if we minded them parking in front of us. They promised they would be away early in the morning but needless to say,the following morning we were ready to move before them and had to ask them to move!!
Unique Quality: The stunning views to the Outer Hebrides, watching a storm moving across the sea and the friendliness of the locals. Oh, and we saw an interesting toad!!
Be aware that the jetty, like many, is in a poor state of repair and has a rather uneven surface. Watch you don't trip!!

Rua Reidh Guesthouse: It's the end of the world
If you like to be on a very remote place this might be something for you. We had a very good time staying at the lighthouse. We liked it so much that we stayed for four nights instead of the the planned two. And if I ever will be in the area again I will definately stay here again.
The road leading to the lighthouse is a very narrow single track road and it takes some time to get to Gairloch. The next pub is in Melvaig which is a 3 miles walk.
Unique Quality: The rooms are cosy and practical. There is a very well equiped self catering kitchen and there are two sitting rooms for all. Sheep will be the first thing you'll see in the morning or maybe a chicken.... Fran is heart of the kitchen while Chris is managing all the other things to keep up the business. The full Scotish breakfast (6 Pounds) has been a good starter every morning and you can also get dinner if you want (13 Pounds).

Rua Reidh Lighthouse B+B: Stay in a lighthouse on the Scottish coast!
At the end of the road north of Gairloch is a lighthouse surrounded by incredible coastal and mountain scenery. The hosts offer accommodations, and also organize hiking, walking, rock climbing, etc. activities.
Unique Quality: Unique accommodations in a lighthouse
Great Hosts: Chris Barrett and Fran Cree
Beautiful, rugged coastline
Out-of-the-way location
The hosts offer both meals and access to a self-catering kitchen.
The whole building can be rented out for gatherings
Our only regret is that we were just there for one night. We would DEFINITELY return, and highly recommend it!!
