dolphins
by iaint
I'm thinking of a trip to Inverness at the end of the month which could involve an overnight trip.
I'd love to see the Moray Firth dolphins, but as my friend gets seasick easily, a boat trip is out of the question.
That leaves Chanonry Point on the Black Isle to see them from the shore.
Questions -
anyone know if there's a particular time of day or state of the tide when the chances are better?
is the time of year relevant - for example would our chances be better in summer?

We were on the Black Isle over Christmas and New Year a couple of years ago. We never did see dolphins. However, people were surprised that we didn't. I guess it depends on luck, etc. We did see sea eagles, one perching less than 10 feet away, which was an excellent alternative!!

We were there in August and didn't see them. I think it's just a matter of being lucky. So: Good luck!

I went on the boat trip in mid-July and didn't see them. I'll be green with envy if you manage it from the shore! :-)

Best time of the day is with incoming tide (we were told by loacls)
We were rather lucky and did see some 'black points' from Chanonry Point.

Thanks all.
I spent all my childhood holidays messing about in boats on the Moray Firth, and never saw anything more interesting than a flounder. Tasty, but not much fun.
I feel I've missed out when it comes to the dolphins.
Anyway, I go there frequently again now, so I must get lucky eventually.

You can also see them from the fortifications around Ft. George but I would take binoculars to get a good sighting

Well, we went this morning.
Incoming tide (good), -5c (bad) and foggy (bad).
It was so cold we only stayed 20 minutes, and saw a couple of things which were either dolphins or porpoise, but not the dramatic leaping pod which the lucky ones see. Next time...
Anyway, we loved the Black Isle countryside totally covered in thick white frost in the morning sun.
Travel Tips for Inverness
On the list of historic places...
by balfor
On the list of historic places we saw, there was an old church a little ways outside of Inverness that looked like a good afternoon jaunt. The directions to the place are kind of obscure and I'm not sure what the name of the place was, but it definately qualifies for 'Off the beaten path'. From the Torguish house, you cross M-5 headed toward Aberdeen, take the first right, follow that til you are lost, take a right and follow that for about 10 more miles. There you will find a small church replete with a cemetary dating back hundreds of years. It is a pretty interesting place to read all the gravestones and the life stories of those interred therein.
Walk along the River Ness
by kathymof
There is a wonderful walk along the River Ness. You can actually walk quite a ways starting in the area of Inverness Castle and heading south. It is a circular trip so you can start on one side and finish on the other. There are three beautiful foot bridges you can cross with two of them taking you to an island that is in the middle of the river. I walked it alone and felt perfectly safe the whole time. Many locals obviously enjoy the walk as well. One fun thing I saw is in the picture to the left - there was a downed tree on the island and someone had painted a mouth inside a cavity in the log and also painted an eye - it looked like the Loch Ness Monster! Kids would probably love it. The paths were well maintained and clean. It made for a very pleasant stoll on a warm, sunny afternoon.
The Highlands
by penrithmere
"Scotland"
I am American, but my heart is in the highlands of Scotland.
No mosquitoes, plenty of rain, wind, and Haggis; Scotland was my favorite place to be from the UK. I loved it due to the magnificent mountains and the trees with either white or red flowers, and to top it off with streams runnning every where. The landscapes taken from the Harry Potter movies are from Scotland, and the movie Braveheart completed to whole feel of this land.
