Daytrip: Inverness-Inverness (1/5)
by Redang
I'd like to propose you a good trip outside Inverness. Due to I'll add some places, I'll use some tips, all of them, "Off the...".
Leave the city along road A 835 (northwest) crossing Ness river (main pic), and after some 40 kms., stop here, Inchbae Lodge Guest House, by Garve (on your left), to have a coffee (second pic).
Keep driving along the same road leaving Loch Broom on your left (third pic) until you arrive in Ullapool.

Culloden Battlefield

An essential stop on the Scottish history tour. Museum and movie are well done. Take tour guide for battlefield as they add a great deal and it is really nothing more than an open field without them.
Urquhart Castle
by stevezero
Urquhart Castle is one one of Scotland's most visited castles. It is also one of the most exploited. We had free admission via Historic Scotland card, but otherwise I would not have bothered, instead joining the many who just park up, take a few photos for free and move on. I would save my money for the magnificent Fort George, east of inverness.
Anyway, a brief history -
Urquhart witnessed considerable conflict throughout its 500 years as a medieval fortress and its history from the 13th to 17th centuries was particularly bloody. Following Edward I’s invasion, it fell into English hands and was then reclaimed and lost again. In the 14th century, it figured prominently in the Scots’ struggle for independence and came under the control of Robert the Bruce after he became King of Scots.
In the 15th and 16th centuries, the castle and glen were frequently raided from the west by the ambitious Macdonald Lords of the Isles.

Inverness
by Krumel
I stayed in Inverness for a week in 1998 together with a friend, and we had a great time there. The weather was as good as it gets, and our B&B was perfect.
On three days we rented bicycles, and we cycled along Loch Ness, went to the Black Isle and to Cullodden Fields via Cawdor Castle and the Clava Cairns.
For a beautiful walk along the River Ness follow the signposts for "Ladies' Walk" in Inverness.
