KIRKWALL HELP

by vickyjf11

Hi,
we will be in Kirkwall for a few hours. I cannot find information on hop on hop off bus. Can someone inform me ABOUT THIS. ALSO HOW FAR IS THE CENTER OF TOWN FROM THE SEAPORT. THANK YOU

Re: KIRKWALL HELP

by leics

You probably can't find information because there is no hop-on, hop-off bus. Thre is no need for one.

Kirkwall is a tiny, tiny place: 7600 people. It is a city because it has a cathedral (this is the way in the UK).

You can walk from the port to the cathedral in 10 minutes.

Look here for places of interest to see in the city:

There is not really enough in Kirkwall to occupy you for much more than a two or three hours, pleasant though it is.

You should try to visit prehistoric Maes Howe and Skara Brae. Your cruise may organise a tour, and you would be sensible to take that up.

Otherwise, you can either pay for a taxi (Mainland is not a very large island) or, if the cruise schedule allows, possibly go on an island-organised tour Examples here:

Agree with above post - just walk. Make sure you visit the cathedral - it is magnificent - was in Orkney for two weeks and I went back to the cathedral three times and it wasn't for church (LOL).

If you, or someone you love, loves jewelry, go to the Shelah Fleet Jewellery store and say "charge". Here is the web site: http://www.sheilafleet.com/

I get comments all the time on the her jewellery and everyone loves it. Very unique and very Orkney.

Travel Tips for Inverness

Pancakes & More

by psychocy about The Pancake House

This little breakfast restaurant offers good food at affordable prices. Yummy pancakes of all varieties can be had for cheap, as can eggs and bacon cooked to your liking. The Pancake Place is more than just pancakes, offering burgers, paninis, and pasta, as well as jacket potatoes. It is open 7 days a week. We were pretty much broke by the time we got to Inverness, so we became experts at sniffing out deals and often got a special that was on in the mornings at the Pancake Place. It came with, if I remember correctly, a big pancake, an egg, bacon, and toast, and only cost a couple quid. It was scrumptious and hot on those cold mornings.

Bridge Street

by shivan

like all the places like this in the Northern Europe, Inverness offers to visitors and citizens a lovely commercial, pedestrian street.
The one in Inverness is called Bridge Street, because it brings to the Ness Bridge of the River Ness, that cuts the town in two before making a nice dive into the Loch Ness.
Many many restaurants are available here, including an italian one that I foolishly decided to try.
It is called "Bella Italia", and was also incredibly crowdy, but food didn't meet the expectations an italian may have. A mistake I have no problems to admit

A Short Stop On My Way North

"Inverness"

I had a few hours to kill in Inverness before my bus left for Thurso/Scrabster. So I decided to walk around town. I walked up the hill to the castle (now an operating courthouse apparently) which had lovely views of the city and visited the museum just adjacent. Some very interesting displays and it's free!
