The Dunollie Hotel which caused much confusion by scottishvisitor, 3 more photos We booked this hotel through Octopus Travel via the internet - they called it the Swallow Broadford. Skye isn't big on street names or streets for that matter. We went up Main Street & back down again but could not find the Hotel. We did eventually find a new one but it was under construction, we asked the workmen to direct us - problem solved - the hotel is part of the Swallow Group but named The Dunollie Hotel. I'm glad we found it, a good all round tourist hotel with funny entertainment, nice comfortable rooms and full Scottish breakfast included in the room rate, but best of all excellent sea views. My favourite. Just over the bridge is the small village of Kyleakin, which is mostly bypassed by cars, since the bridge replaced the ferry. (I have memories of traffic queues right through Kyleakin). Kyleakin (not to be confused with "Kyle" on the other side of the bridge (ie on the mainland) which is short for Kyle of Lochalsh, anyway, Kyle is no dominated by 4 hostels: Run by SYHA (HI), Haggis, MacBackpackers and by a quiet couple who run the popular Dun Caan. I prefer Dun Caan because the owners are very helpful and welcoming, its cosy and more feminine, less boisterous and safer. Less of the rowdy tour buses and more genuine travellers. But it is only small, so can book up quickly. I'd certainly choose it in preference to the noisy and basic hostel in Portree, which in summer suffers for its central location near the pubs and bars. (see local customs).
Sleeps 16, in a small, terraced house. Very clean and lovingly maintained. Terry also runs personal tours / taxi in his Landrover. Loch Greshornish from Shorefield House by RhineRoll I've stayed at the Shorefield House twice, and each time the service was great. Very good breakfast.

The Scottish Youth Hostel Association hostel in Kyleakin is a fairly average establishment - in fact one of the least impressive hostels that I've stayed in. I stayed here on two occasions a few days apart both times in twin bedded rooms made up of a bunk bed and a sink. While the first room was badly in need of redecorating, with holes in the wall and a dodgy electricity point, the second room was acceptable enough for the price. I'd also say the location of the hostel isn't that great, in that Kyleakin is in the east of the island near the mainland, perhaps somewhere a bit further north west such as Portree might be a bit more useful for seeing the sights and accessing the other islands by ferry, certainly if you don't have your own transport.
Unique qualities included a swimming pool in the shower room - no matter what time of the morning you went in there for a shower, the floor would be wet to the point that it was fairly dangerous. All they'd need to do would be to put a mop and bucket in there and, voila, problem solved. Another annoying thing was that the single light in the loos was broken for two nights in a row - slightly annoying when you suddenly find yourself in need at 3am in the pitch dark... On the plus side, it's fairly large, fairly cheap and anonymous and the kitchen is clean. Also has (expensive) internet access and a tv room to hang out in if your room gets too claustrophobic. It's one of the few hostels on the island that have rooms with fewer beds and family rooms, in case you don't fancy sharing a dorm with loads of snoring strangers. I am delighted to have the opportunity to write a review of the White Heather Hotel. I first met Craig and Gillian last summer and was at once struck by the sincerity and friendliness of their welcome. The hotel is spotlessly clean and comfortable and is truly a ‘home away from home’, except that the view from home cannot compare! The hotel is ideally situated along the pier with spectacular views over the tiny harbour and towards the Kintail mountains. Staying at the White Heather is certainly worth the 9 hour drive from Yorkshire to get there. So impressed was I by the hotel, its location and its proprietors, that I had to return later in the year, and have visited again this summer. Craig and Gillian work together to provide the Skye bound traveller with everything he or she needs: a hearty breakfast, tourist information and advice on planning an excellent day out, recommendations of local restaurants and a relaxing atmosphere to return to. There are lots of places to go to if you want a packed holiday at breakneck speed – in my experience Skye is not one of these. Thankfully there are still spectacular, quiet places to enjoy, unwind and re-charge – this is why I don’t hesitate to recommend the White Heather. Cup of tea anyone? by iandsmith This was the best B&B we stayed in during our five weeks in Great Britain. Rosemarie liked it straight away because it was clean. Then she liked it even better when she saw the comfortable and spacious bedroom upstairs. Then, upon entering and every time we walked in thereafter, we were offered a cup of tea by our congenial host Alison. That's where I was won over. "Strathgorm Bed and Breakfast accommodation is located just a few miles from the Skye Bridge at Breakish by Broadford. The house is a modern house built to the highest standards of comfort and situated in its own grounds on the beautiful Isle of Skye. The area teems with wildlife and is ideal for walkers, cyclists or simply visitors who want to escape the hurly burly of city life and journey around the island at a relaxed 'Highland' pace. Visitors to Strathgorm can look forward to a warm welcome and island hospitality from Mrs Alison Graham who more than likely will have some fresh home baking coming out of the oven just as you arrive ... Failte as we say in the Gaelic." As quoted I would agree with their spiel except to query the "teems with wildlife" claim. Coming from Oz where I have experienced all manner of animals just outside the door I feel it is a touch extravagant.
They do, however, have birds that are regular feeders out the back, particularly a pheasant that I took about 20 shots of but still wasn't overly happy with any of them. Alison is a wonderful host though her husband is apt to be away (we never did meet him) working on a local fish farm. It's quiet (apart from the wind!) and parking is no problem. Definitely a place I would recommend. Theme: Bed and BreakfastPrice: US$40-80 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Breakish

by bicycle_girl First I need to tell you that this accomodation is not on Skye but just a ferry away, off Armadale Bay. Like my title said it was superior quality I had at this hostel, new equipment, new kitchen, lovely bunk beds, and the coffee shop down was just lovely. I was shown around and greeted in a friendly manner.

I haven't stayed here, so please don't expect me to comment on the interior. The bungalow is located in the pretty village of Stein, near the well-known Stein inn. The owners have assembled a small tourist guide for disabled visitors to Skye.

by bicycle_girl The greeting was somewhat unfriendly but you can't really comment on the hostel based on the greeting you recieved as the person in question might not be there if you plan to visit yourself. The facilities were wonderful. Great bunks, only 4 beds in my room. Large kitchen. The tv is in the entrance hall and the control belonged to the person working at the desk. But overall, a nice cheap place to stay in the middle of Portree...

We stayed in some sort of hostel on the borders of Loch Aviemore in Stromferry. There used to be a ferry but not anymore, the only thing remaining is a tiny trainstation. This place is owned by the directior of my tourcompany and it serves its purpose perfectly. Location is great, hardly no neighbours and best of all, you have the whole place to yourself. Its a self catering affair and since there is no supermarket nearby you have to plan your dinner and evening drinks well in advance. It only ads to the fun.
Location is superberb! The view from my room was stunning. Theme: HostelAddress: StromferryDirections: Loch Aviemore
