More about Carters Rest Guesthouse
Authentic Scottish Highland Experience
We stayed at Carter's Rest Guesthouse for two nights as part of a week's driving holiday through Scotland. The guesthouse is located in Glendale on the Isle of Skye, one of the more remote and magical places in the Highlands, but the rest of the island is still accessible by car for day trips. The guesthouse itself is brand new and furnished to a high standard. You won't want to leave your room. The rooms each have a lap-top computer with internet access. The guest lounge has cosy wood heating. providing a perfect place to relax at the end of the day, and the dining room has incredible views over rugged coastline. Breakfast is included and delicious evening meals are available by arrangment. If stuck for an evening meal, there is a coffee shop / restaurant only five minutes drive away that provides decent home-cooked meals. The owners were very warm and welcoming and are very knowledgable about things to see and do in the area. We simply didn't want to leave.
Excellent Self Catering
We stayed here for 5 nights in March/April.
The initial dealing with the owners was easy and friendly. Any emails dealt with proomptly and helpfully. As was the welcome when we arrived.
We had chosen the Self-Cateering accomodation - part of the main building, but with its own entrance.
The unit was spotless, well kitted out, comfortable, and warm. The location was wonderful. Peacefull and quiet. This was our fourth visit to Skye, and still in love with it. You must visit Glenbrittle beach.
The addition of a laptop for use by guests is great. We actually took our own to download photos at the end of each day, but the ability to use their WiFi was more than welcome.
The most amazing thing we still find about Skye was how dark it is at night. With no light pollution, it really was pitch dark at night.
Carters Rest Guesthouse Is Amazing!
When we got to the Isle of Skye in September of 2006 we were amazed at the views and how beautiful the area was! Our stay with Carter's Rest was wonderful. My friend took several pictures of the area as well as myself, but the breakfasts as well as the dinners with Betty and Freddie as our hostess and host were magnificent. We had a wonderful time with them, and I have to say that these two are some of the most friendly people we have ever met. The accomodations were wonderful. Everything was clean, and spotless and done with care. Thank you to you both for making our trip to Scotland even better.
Wonderful honeymoon destination
We stayed at Carters Rest at the start of our honeymoon in Scotland, en route to Harris and Lewis. We had visited Skye before but not this north west corner and the location and scenery really are quite beautiful. Carter Rest was a well appointed and modern guest house- as an added touch we were upgraded to the main room on arrival, so we had a lovely comfy bed and huge bathroom. The room was really well equipped and decorated, with lovely furnishings etc. As we were quite late in the season there were limited places to eat in the evening- we were directed to An Strupag a resturant, come local store, and we had two really good evening meals here, with the collie dog sat at our feet! Breakfast at the b and b were very good. The walks around Carters Rest are stunning and we did a day trip back to Portree and to Dunvegan Castle. We would certainly recommend Carters Rest- the owners were very welcoming- we felt that they really appreciated the fact that we were on honeymoon- its difficult to explain, but if we wanted to talk they would talk, but otherwise they would leave us to enjoy this special time together- excellent hosts!
Carters - home away from home
We stayed at Carters from 1st to 3rd of May, 2008 and thoroughly enjoyed our stay here ! The main reason which prompted us to choose this place over the others was its location. The guesthouse is situated at the North Western tip of the island, facing the sea. When we first looked at the aerial photograph of the guesthouse on its website, we were immediately enchanted by the sight what we saw.
Unlike many other places which we have contacted via internet before we discovered Carters (yes, we only discovered this gem much later), the owners replied us almost immediately. So, our bookings were made directly with them without any problem.
Betty and Freddie deserve a five-star rating for the way they run Carters. In addition to the finer details they provided in our room, the wonderful breakfasts and dinners cooked by Freddie won an additonal star to our rating!
The food was delicious, the red wine was good, the guesthouse was warm, the service was excellent, the view from the dining room was magnificent - we couldn't have asked for more!!
The evening after dinner chats with them and other guests in their cosy living room and the occasional game of pool before calling it a night made this place "a home away from home" during our stay in Skye.It makes us want to come back again and like many others who have experienced the magical hospitality of Betty and Freddie, I think we definitely will !!
Skye is absolutely gorgeous! We stayed at Carter's Rest for 2 nights and could not have been received more warmly by Betty and Freddy. The room was lovely, but the host and hostess really made the stay special. Our first night we enjoyed a delicious lasagna dinner made by Freddy starting with homemade carrot soup. They were very helpful at providing suggestions and maps for walks and helped arrange transportation to the Three Chimneys where we had a first class dinner on our second night. The scenery was amazing, the sunsets breathtaking and the weather glorious. Can you tell we had a great time?

We have never been made to feel more welcome. Betty and Freddie were quite simply amazing hosts.
We had a fabulous 3 nights. Our 5 year old was made to feel like a little king during his stay and this enabled us to relax throughout our stay.
Everything from the rooms to the food (beakfast and evening) was fantastic. We could not have chosen a better place for our relaxing child friendly stay.
The old school restaurant was also great and very child friendly.
What a wonderful stay!
Betty & Freddy:
We have arrived back in Newfoundland after a great trip to Scotland. The highlight, of course, was our stay with you on Skye. Such a wonderful island, such a wonderful B&B and such wonderful hosts. Your hospitality was heart warming and welcoming. You took time to engage with us and other guests and it was such fun to share stories and information with people lke Chic & Elsi! Carters Rest was a home away from home. Your B&B is in the best location - what a view from our breakfast sitting! The bedroom was very comfortable and large with a great view and we were in a perfect spot to tour Skye. Dawn & I still talk about the trip and rave about Skye and your place to anyone who'll listen! We plan to return and will definitely stay at Carters Rest ...
Warmest regards ....Jim & Dawn Hanson
A home away from home!
Carters Rest was a fabulous place to stay during our trip in Skye. Located in a wonderful spot with fantastic views, the guest house was warm, inviting, and very comfortable. Betty and Freddie were amazing hosts who were always smiling and friendly – and very knowledgeable about the area from where to visit and what restaurants to eat in. Freddie's breakfasts were delicious especially his scrambled eggs! We would whole-heartedly recommend staying here – and we look forward to paying them both a visit in the near future.
