A Lovely Weekend Break
by TripAdvisor Member alliejm
We booked this via a newspaper offer for DBB 2 for 1 and I have to admit after reading some reviews on here was rather dubious by the time it came to go for the weekend. We had upgraded to a four poster room and the view from this was superb. We had a lovely time and the food was excellent and the owners welcoming and helpful. I would recommend this for a weekend without hesitation. Kingussie is a v. quiet village but it is central for other attractions in the area.
I would say that breakfast being served only between 8.30 and 9.15 a.m. on a Sunday morning was a bit off putting but after the initial thought of getting up early on a Sunday it did mean that you had more time to explore the area before returning home.
All in all it was a delightful, clean, quiet hotel and ideal for a romantic weekend away.
Overpriced cheap motel room poorly maintained - poor value for money
by TripAdvisor Member nonimaclennan
Alarm bells should have rung when we were asked for a non-refundable deposit of £90 when booking. On arrival Bill showed us to our room in the courtyard and quickly made off without asking us if we were happy with the room. No wonder! This room had not been properly cleaned for a long time. Dust hung from beneath the radiator and from the bathroom fan which did not work anyway! The decor left a lot to be desired with horrible drab wallpaper in the bedroom and cheap marble effect wallboard in the bathroom. We were frozen, scalded and then frozen again several times before we managed to get the shower to settle at a warm dribble. On checking out the mini-bar prices we thought they were reasonable. However we were horrified at a footnote which indicated we would be charged up to £10 per bottle corkage if we wished to drink our own alcohol in the room???! This disgusted us to the extent that we did not wish to spend our money in the hotel so we purposefully ate out on both nights of our stay. Our first night's stay was disturbed by constantly banging central heating pipes. We reported that and the fauty fan to Myra the next morning but nothing was done so also our second night's sleep was disturbed by the banging pipes. Apparently she was waiting for an electrician to fix the fan.
A full breakfast consisted of a sausage, a slice of bacon, an egg, a chopped mushroom, a spoon of beans and get this - half a slice of black pudding and half a slice on inedible haggis which was left by all the guests. However I guess it beat the sausage, bacon and egg we asked for the second morning because that's excactly what was served, a sausage, slice of bacon and an egg! All in all I'm afraid we considered that we certainly did not get value for money at the Columba House.
Nice break

We stayed for just the one night recently having booked for a bargain £45 (on visitscotland.com) for the 2 of us altogether B&B. The hotel was clean, Myra was friendly and the breakfast was pretty good. We didn't use the bar or restaurant as we ate out in Kingussie. We wouldn't have any qualms recommending the hotel to others or staying there again in future.
Better than expected

We were, like others on trip advisor, a little worried as to what we might encounter, but were pleasantly suprised. The hotel owner was friendly and not overbearing.
Like others, we too found the corkage note (and charges) more than a little strange and intimidating. However, we too opened our own wine, drank it and took the empty bottle away with us. What on earth is that all about? We have never come accross this before.
Breakfast was fine, coffee a little weak, but thats purely personal taste, bacon, sausages and black pudding had a local feel to them and certainly didnt taste like those sold in the supermarkets.
Decor is ready for an update, but all in all, not a bad place at all and we would go back, but only at the discounted rates and not the full price as avertised.
The most fantastic and relaxing break
by TripAdvisor Member morticiaAberdeen
This is the third time that we have stayed at the Columba House Hotel and yet again it didnt disappoint. After a very difficult month at home we were ready for a relaxing and stress free break and thats exactly what we got.
Myra and Bill are extrememly welcoming and you are made to feel special the minute you arrive. The Penthouse suite we stayed in this time was just wonderful, really comfortable and spacious. The food as always was exceptional. We will most definantly be going back again and soon we hope!

The Columba House Hotel was a wonderful place to stay. We were made to feel very welcome, every need was catered for, the room was comfortable and clean and the food was incredible! A view to the The Cairngorm was an added bonus and the location is central to many Scottish tourist attractions i.e. The Whiskey Trail, The Cairngorm, Ben Nevis range and The Loch Ness cruise.
A WEE GEM

Nothing too much bother, a great raport with the guests, good food and plenty of it are all trademarks of this small hotel. It was like being at home with mum looking after us. There is a charming time warp in the sixties music and optic fibre plant pulsing on the mantlepiece but everything else was up to date and efficient. Some nice wines also available and the bar was extremely well stocked. Well done Myra and Bill.
What a tonic - we cannot wait to repeat the experience.

We arrived in Kingussie headed straight for the Columba, as we had stayed here before on a few occassions, we had asked for the room named "James Court" which was to its usual high standard of cleanliness and very well appointed - en suite, TV, mini bar, telephone and a comfortable large bed. Once settled in our room (where our Labrador-Isla stays, she feels at home) while we made our way to the hotel restaurant. We were offered a drink by Myra (she is always interested in what you have been doing since your last visit, and given the menus to peruse - as always very extensive choices, we ordered our dinner, before long we were shown to our table and our food (which was cooked beautifully by Bill) was served by Myra. We retired to the lounge for our liquers and coffee where the other guests were gathered - our surroundings and the company helped us to feel at ease and relaxed.
We bid goodnight to the other guests and Myra and made our way back to our room -
Next morning we had a hearty, tasty breakfast , cooked by Bill. Myra was interested in what we were to be doing that day (always friendly, nothing is too much trouble for her or Bill) We took a leisurely drive to Inverness - for a spot of shopping, returning via Aviemore Centre.
Our room had been tidied (not an easy job - we are messy people!) We had ordered what we wanted for dinner before we left the hotel in the morning, it was ready for us. Delicious!!!!!
The Columba House Hotel gets our vote every visit - 110%

Warm and friendly hosts, a homely Scottish hotel in picturesque surroundings and great value for money.
by TripAdvisor Member ScotSEdinburgh
We found our hosts to be extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel was very traditional and attractive, with great facilities (restaurant, lounge, gardens etc) and a homely feel. The food and service was good with a varied menu catering for all tastes. The location was ideal for exploring Kingussie and provided a picturesque setting for the hotel itself. The only negative point would be that the bedroom and dining areas could be a little on the chilly side! Overall, however, the stay was great value for money and a very enjoyable experience.
