Isle of Skye -- Portree
Portree is the main town on the Isle of Skye -- its name comes from the Gaelic 'Port-an-Righ' which means King's Port -- this goes back to a visit by King George V in 1540 who wanted the island clans to support him.
Of course it was to Skye that Bonnie Prince Charlie fled after defeat at Culloden in 1746 -- he was aided by Flora MacDonald in his flight to France and he said farewell to her in what wasMacNab's Inn on Bank Street -- this is now the Royal Hotel.
Portree is a busy town with lots of shops and of course a busy harbour -- if you go to Skye you'll surely go to Portree.
