Used clothing shops
by dogkojo
Hello
I will be in Scotland traveling around for 10 days in October. I'll have some free time in Edinburgh and would be interested in shopping at some used clothing stores. Is there a particular area of the city where I can find some nice shops?
Thank you.

All the charity shops sell used clothing and can be found all over. e.g.Oxfam, Save the Children, British Heart, and so on ad infinitum!

Such shops are called 'charity shop'in the UK, and are often clustered together in a particular street or area.
This site will help you locate those in Edinburgh:

If you want to look at specialist secondhand clothing (e.g. designer), you could try
http://www.armstrongsvintage.co.uk/ on Grassmarket or
http://www.hermanbrown.co.uk/ at 151 West Port
and quite a lot more listed here:

The Morningside area has lots of charity shops which due to it being an upmarket neighbourhood, it has a better quality of donation. Cannot say I've been but that's always been the rumour.

Armstrong's in the Grassmarket has a fantastic slection of second-hand vintage clothing. I was there last summer and wanted to buy the whole shop!

I can confirm that Morningside has the best charity shops in Scotland.

Great Pubs and History

Mary King's Close under the City Chambers is an old Close (lane) which was built over years ago and gives a wonderful insight into the old city. Scary, amusing, atmospheric and curiously touching The best memory is walking along the Dean Path in the snow. What I miss most is the skyline.

WHEn your in edinburgh The only thing I can think you may not like is the weather.
I must say though it was still great as normally in jan I sit on the beach not wrapt up in heaps of winter gear so It was nice change and minus six is now the coldest day in my life and edinburgh holds claim to that.

Every August, there is an arts and entertainment festival called the Fringe Festival. There is also a Military Tattoo in front of the castle. This means that you should book lodgings well in advance. More importantly, it means beware of clown street-performers!! They are very scary. If you turn into a dark alleyway and you hear the squeaky sound of big shoes following you, RUN! It's probably an evil clown coming to get you!!!

Lovely pub in Newhaven Trinity that has fantastic views across the Fourth to Fife. they do food as well, but you can't see the views from the dining area, but it's nice to eat here too.
Quite rustic, old world style pub, very friendly and a good pint as well!

Harrods of the North
by Suet about Jenners
Jenners has been around for ages, they style themselves as the Harrods of the North and this is THE place to shop. Lots of designer clothes, fancy goods, amazing Christmas displays... I go there just to get ideas for Christmas decs sometimes. Sometimes I shop for special items... yes it IS expensive, yes they DO have a good perfume selection and yes the CAKES are good too.
If you like browsing around shops, this is perfect for you. When you have finished you can go and have a cup of tea at the cafe. You get some really nice scarves, a quaich *a drinking cup* any amount of swords and daggers, even a suit of armour if you like... celtic jewellery, reproduction art, kilts and pagpipes, really good knitwear, too numerous to mention really. You just need to come and see. (Don't tell anyone, shortbread is really good).
If you must buy a silly nessie hat, go ahead. Depends on you budget, but it's not cheap....
