celebrating new years (or hogmanay as it is called in edinburgh) is the best! The street party is so much fun. However I hope you are not thinking of goin there this year,.. Hostels and hotels will probably be booked out.. most restaurants too.. you need a ticket for the hogmanay street party and they might be sold out too! New years in Edinburgh is somethin you plan well ahead!!
Good luck though and have fun whenever it is you're going! :)

If you haven't booked anything then try going to Le Monde on George Street. They operate a first come first served policy on New Years Eve as opposed to most other places being ticket only (see page 8 of the link below).

If you don't have any accomodation yet then you'll struggle to get anywhere central. My advice would be to look towards the less fashionable areas such as Portobello where there are plenty of B&Bs. This is also served by the Nightbus which is usually free over the New Year period (the tab is usually picked up by Tennants brewery).

Visit Scotland has quite a good accomodatation search engine

Hope that helps,

Visit Edinburgh Castle & see a military tatoo. No, it is not when a group of army lads line up & have their rank tattoed, it's a military march complete with bagpipes. Spending a night with a good friend and having no accomodation & no money. Got to explore the entire city at night including the 24-hour toilet, train station & every local park.

If you weren't present during the emotional crowning of Robert the Bruce, don't despair! C'mon over to Edinburgh Castle and you'd relive the days of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce again....
Sorry, but my REAL hero is actually William Wallace. However he died prematurely and couldn't taste the FREEDOM that he craved so much for Scotland. It was Robert the Bruce who finally became the first King of Scotland. I'll share more Scottish history with you later.... Come back again soon.
Packing List

I'm a light packer, which can be very nice when carrying all my things throughout the world. However, I wished I had brought more sweaters to Ed. It was really cold. I like to wear tights under my jeans, and I'm glad I did. BandAids for your feet, lotion for your dry skin, Febreeze for the smelly smoke in clubs....ugh. The film is very expensive all over the UK, and they only sell 200 speed. Buy it at home and save money. Batteries too.
