Its a fantastic building viewed from afar, such fancy, ornate sandstone. But, this former student accommodation has got problems.
Its not too bad, especially if you are in a group, but if alone, my heart would sink on arrival. Just its location and entrance would depress me. Reception is grotty, the staff were poorly trained and unhelpful on my visit (I know this can be a one off, but it is my experience).
Unique Quality: Accommodation is made of of many smaller units, one time apartments, and entry is via a side door off the street - leading to a common stairwell. Staff have no control on who enters or when. Reception is elsewhere. Some of the 'apartments are occupied by long staying residents and workers.
So, despite having good bunk beds and investing in the usual hostel facilities, this place is fundamentally off-putting to me. Entry is on Cowgate, a dark, threatening place which at night turns into a drunken brawling street, closed off to traffic because of the number of clubs and bars.
If this sounds your cup of tea, good. It wouldn't be a disaster staying here - but the odds are shorter than other places. I hope the owner has sorted it since I was there - he has hostels in St andrews and Inverness too. The St Andrews one is his latest and good. The Inverness one (Eastgate) not so good.
