Looking for Scottish Bridge Clubs and where can one enjoy a winter vacation
by 99billy
Hello Again, Thanks for your suggestions regarding finding a Kilt. Here in Canada where the snow falls approx 6 feet deep and the weather can be minus 45 degrees, a Scottish winter vacation would be nice with the World's best folks at a Bridge Club. We do know that that the Scots are fast becoming the World's best cooks. Therefore we are looking for a affordable vacation. Thanks.

I have tried but can't figure out the question. One would think they play bridge, so is that what you plan on doing? Seems like a long trip to play cards.
The Scot's are good cooks therefore we are looking for a affordable vacation. What does that mean?
Travel Tips for Edinburgh
Scottish Guards Only A Memory
by tpal
This pretty much falls in the category of "You'll only see it here"! Up until March of 2002 there were round the clock Scottish guards stationed at entrance of Edinburgh Castle. Apparently the British Army felt that the Army's resources were overstretched and they were therefore ending the centuries old tradition. Given the fact that the guards at Buckingham Palace were to continue their similar duties and in view of the traditional warm and fuzzy relationships between the English and the Scots...the decision was not overly popular in Edinburgh.
This is a breathtaking view...

This is a breathtaking view from the ramparts of Edinburgh Castle looking over the Firth (for those non-Scots out there, that is the bay!) From this vantage point you have the most amazing view of the whole region, and it is incredible to see! The whole city was alive when I was there. The Military Tattoo was going on as well as the Fringe Festival. People from all over the world converge on Edinburgh in early August, so the energy there was just amazing! Note in the distance a tower atop a hill? See my next tip for more information!
Real men & women don't drink...
by EdinburghRoc
Real men & women don't drink half pints.
Malt whisky is best, Blend is next, then grain. The more years to mature the better and more expensive.
DON'T Buy cheap whisky anything under £9 a bottle.
Do try Malts yes EVEN YOU CAN & WILL FIND ONE to your taste. Never put water or ice in a good Malt NEVER!
Its normal here to have both a whisky and a beer in a pub.
Drinking age in the U.K. is eighteen.
If it does NOT come from Scotland then its NOT Scotch.
Buy a Fish Supper with brown sauce & eat it walking home. AND I HAVE NEVER MET ANYONE WHO HAS EATEN a fryed Mars bar ! Really ! And I live here.

Statue of Charles II
by Dabs
The statue of Charles II astride a horse that stands in between St. Giles and Parliament Hall (now the law courts) appears to be of a Roman Emperor, if you've ever seen a portrait of Charles II with his long flowing hair, you'll know that this is hardly an accurate representation of the fellow. That's because the statue was originally supposed to be of Oliver Cromwell (don't think he looked much like a Roman emperor either), as these things sometimes go, the Restoration came and Cromwell was out of power by the time the statue was finished so it became Charles II.
I didn't witness this but our guide assured us it was true, a hole in the horse gives the appearance of the horse peeing when it rains.
Harrod's of the North
by tvor about Jenner's Department Store
Jenners was founded in 1838 and was privately run as a family business until recently, when it was bought out by the House of Fraser. It is a fairly exclusive department store on Prince's Street, Edinburgh. They are very proud of Jenner's and refer to it as the Harrod's of the North. The old part of the store has an open atrium to the roof with the floors circling around the elaborate railings. The newer part has expanded into the building next door. There is a food hall as well. Perhaps not as extensive as the one in Harrod's or Fortnum's but very interesting just the same. We had tea and buns in the cafe there and overall i would say Jenner's is a lot more comfortable and welcoming than the oh so posh Harrod's. There are also outlets at both the Glasgow and Edinburgh airports. Good food hall, lovely linen and china department.
