Surprisingly pleasant
by TripAdvisor Member Natsw
I was booked into this hotel for business and was pleasantly surprised. Having previously stayed at the Thistle in the centre of town I was at first a little disappointed to be less central but the quality of hotel more than made up for that. The staff were friendly and helpful, the room was clean and well maintained and the bathroom was new and very nice. On top of that, I had a really good dinner in the hotel restaurant and breakfast the next morning was also very good. Overall, I would recommend the hotel, especially for business use although I doubt it would be a big disappointment if visiting for pleasure.
Fantastic Bar & Restaurant

My husband and I arrived quite early on the morning of Saturday 12th May for an overnight stay. The Reception staff were very efficient. We left our bags and went off sightseeing for the day. The day itself was quite cold with intermittent rain. When we arrived back at the hotel late afternoon we were cold and damp. Our room was absolutely fine except there was no heating on, and none that we could choose to put on. One of our net curtains was very dirty and torn. Having said that, after a hot bath we went down to the bar and restaurant in the basement of the hotel. Wow! What an amazing atmosphere - it was fizzing! We loved the decor, the staff were really friendly and the food was fantastic. (Isn't it funny how smokers don't seem to feel the cold - the opening and closing of the doors out onto the lovely patio for a desperate fag took the edge off the feel of the restaurant).
The next morning we went down to breakfast, and, again, we were not disappointed. There was a great selection of continental and traditional food, Lovely coffee, not great orange juice, however. We left shortly after breakfast, but would have no hesitation in staying there again. Had we been staying longer we would have addressed the heat problem, but everything else was all you could hope for.
Great.....except heat!!

The hotel and my room were lovely!! The restaurant was also very good, though I only found out when I was about to pay for breakfast, that BREAKFAST IS INCLUDED IN ROOM COST!!
I was unable to figure out how to get the radiator to turn on and the promise that this would be corrected while I was out did not happen. (The weather was VERY cold during my 2 day visit!!)
As well, in the morning, I thought I'd warm up with a hot shower. Despite leaving the hot water running for several minutes, it did not heat up further than luke warm---seriously!!
Great location---easy access to a quick bus to town.
I would suggest checking right away about the heat and shower temp. before either is needed!!

Hogamany last minute - help please
by MDUBYAZ
My buddy and I were able to secure a room at the Best Western Bruntsfield for Dec. 30-Jan.1. However, we do not have tickets for the festival and it looks like the hotel is about a mile from the action. How does one go about getting tickets for the event? Sold out? Is there a scalpers market? Thanks in advance!

Put on some sturdy shoes and walk, you wont be able to get a cab or bus anywhere close. you could try pitching up and see if anyone is punting tix, alternativley you can usually get them on Ebay too. Even if you dont get into the street party area there is still plenty going on around town, try the grassmarket for example although some pubs do it by ticket only. worth souting about during the day to see whats still available.

just heard in the office that you can still get passes to the street party if you buy a "party pack" for £20. go to: http://www.edinburghshogmanay.org

There are plenty of tickets on offer on the link but face value is £5 so don't pay over the odds. I'd recommend some place like Le Monde that does not have tickets for the night.

Cheers mates. Plenty of good advice. Looking online as we speak. This has really turned into a big party. I'm guessing you wish there were less people like the old days?

I don't mind, usually in a bar/club with a private party on Hogmonay, home is walking distance so don't need to fight for a taxi. If there's thousands that wish to party on Princes St in the middle of winter then it doesn't bother me other than to wonder why!
