4days visit

by helio2004

hello
I'm planning to visit Edinburgh late October for 4 nights and I'm currently looking for a self-catered center located apartment for 4 persons.
I have found several ones on the web with good ratings (~100GBP/night), but any reviews from personal experience would help me very much.
I don't mind the facilities, but would like it to have some local color and not IKEA's..
thank you in advance

Hi!

We stayed in a fantastic self-catering apartment smack-bang-middle of the Grassmarket with direct view onto the castle last summer :-)

There's a double bedroom, and a double sofa-bed PLUS a spare bed, so it sleeps 5 effectively.

Travel Tips for Edinburgh

GHOST TOWN

by BerniShand

Edinburgh seems to be obsessed with ghosts, ghouls and things that go bump in the night
Almost every place we visited had at least one ghost, and night time ghost tours are very popular, Edinburgh is home to Scotlands most haunted pub `Nicol Edwards`, obviously a good place to visit if you like to drink spirits

lf you like the idea of being scared half witless then check out Auld Reekies tours on www.auldreekietours.co.uk here is VT member Suet with her new friend at the entrance to Tron Kirk on the Royal Mile, this is the starting for the scare-you-to-bits tours

Arthurs Seat

by Cool-123

It is an easy walking and takes around two hours. At the top you will have an excellent view of the town. You can start from the Queen's Drive. It is located at the back of The Palace of Holyroodhouse.

An unprepared visitor will...

An unprepared visitor will find it diffucult to understand Scottish accent. And it is not only the accent: they use a lot of gaelic words which are unknown to any normal person who studied current English at highschool. Despite of that, their speech is really facinating. 'Loch' for 'lake', 'glen' for 'valley', 'coo' for cow', and what stands for 'raindeer' is unconveyable, with my very modest experience.

Scots have beautiful music. I bought two CD's: Celtic Airs by Gaelforce Orchestra and Scotland:The Dances and Dance Bands. The first is traditional instrumental melodies, and the second is self explanatory. Very beautiful!

along the river leith 2

by uglyscot

Walking along the river Leith on a warm sunny day is quite delightful. It is difficult to remember you are in the centre of Edinburgh. Especially during the festival when it is packed with visitors,
The trees are of different shades of green. the river is fast flowing or like a millpond, or a small weir or a cascade. Ever changing.
I'd heartily recomment this as a way to unwind after the tensions of the day's activities.

Vintage Heaven

by gib157 about Arsmtrongs

This shop was only about 100 yards from our hostel and part of a chain of 3 in Edinburgh. It was just amazing - full to the high ceilings with vintage and retro clothes for both sexes, party outfits, navy gear etc etc. There were some real bargains here and in their other shops. Great find! well I bought 2 jumpers, a tie, a shirt for £22
