It was a few years ago when I did this but a company called Mercat Tours (I think?) used to do different types of ghost tours. The one I went on started from the Mercat Cross on the Royal Mile around 10pm at night. The walking tour lasted about a couple of hours and visited alleyways, vaulted streets etc with an excellent commentary/tour guide and ended up in a graveyard around midnight. Well worth it. Have fun.

Meract Tours are very good - recommend the vaults under the North Bridge or the Auld Burial Ground.

The trip down Mary King's Close is good too

Travel Tips for Edinburgh

There're a lot of things that...

by pmorin

There're a lot of things that you MUST do in Edinburgh!

Begin with the Castle, and then, visit all the way down the High Street (also called Royal mile), wich is the way to go to the Hollyrood Palace (Queen's place!).

You can go on a 2 stages bus with no roof tour, you'll be able to take very beautiful pictures (Scotland is the paradise of the photographers!). And it's also a good way to find the places that you want to visit.

Shopping on High Street as well, and Princes street. You have to visit, the old and the new town.

And really, DON'T miss the Scotland tour and go to the Island of Sky! Amazing, it's all I can say... All the great views, the sceneries...
Scottish are so welcoming, warm... They like tourists. Obviously, you have to speak a really good English because they are pround of their language (the correct English, like they say). They are proud of who they are. They have a huge History, and if you're interested, they'll tell you all about it.

I met this native guy who is a guide all around Scotland , he said 'from now, you'll see Scotland with my eyes' and I did...

Try the Haggis!

by clairegeordio

Haggis is a traditional Scottish dish made from sheep's heart, liver, and lungs, minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, and mixed with stock. Sounds disgusting but it really was delicious. It came traditionally served with "neeps and tatties", which is suede and potato in a gravy. We ate this meal in the Royal Mcgregor, a pub on the Royal Mile. I can thoroughly recommend it there!

Home of Scottish Rugby Union

by scottishvisitor

Murrayfield is home to Scottish Rugby and always provides a great atmosphere with its capacity to hold 67,500 fans. During the six nations championships the flag waving & flag painted faces of the ever friendly rival supporters are a sheer pleasure to behold. Rugby Union is a great spectator sport with sportsmanship amongs the players and the supporters being the top priority and this contributes to the games enjoyment & excitement. A ticket & the National flag of your choice

Craigmillar Castle

by roamer61

A short drive from central Edinburgh is this fine ruin. Craigmillar castle dates to the 15th century and was one of the many fortresses owned my the clans. Like many Scottish castles, it was bombarded by General George Monk during the English Civil War of the mid 17th century. Thus its ruined state. None the less, it still is in good shape and is worthy of a visit for those interested in castles and medieval architecture.

Local Brews

by bcmcbeth about The Pub Crawl

My friends and I participated in an activity called the "Pub Crawl". It is a great way to see Edinburgh at night and to try the local brew along the way.

Start by visiting a pub(we started at the Black Bull Pub near the St. James Shopping Center) and asking for a Pub Crawl map. You move from pub to pub, buying a drink at each, and recieving a stamp on your card. You end the trip at the Worlds End Pub where, if you have recieved all your stamps, you get a t-shirt.

DO NOT attempt this in one night. If you do, you might actually have to CRAWL like the activity suggests.
