  • The best B&B in our world travel!

    by

What makes Gerald's Place the very best is Gerald himself. He hosted us at the first bed & breakfast we stayed in when we arrived in Edinburgh. What a guy! He truly became for us, in those five nights and five delightful breakfasts (he prepared for us), a trustworthy guide ripe with all the right recommendations of things to see, do, and eat as well as offering a clean, easy to find, well located home full of all the amenities (our favorites were the cable television offering 700+ channels and wireless Internet access throughout the whole house) at a reasonable rate.

But it was the dynamic conversations we shared across a plethora of topics that made us feel so at ease and comfortable from start to finish in Edinburgh. The other bed and breakfasts we stayed in when we drove north into the countryside shouldn't be compared to Gerald's because his defines bed & breakfast. After Gerald's, stops in Stirling, Pitlochry, and Inverness were a disappointment as far as accommodations were concerned. We've stayed in others around the world and none compares.

A dear friend once laid out his philosophy of a good bed & breakfast for us like this: there are three components that, if you get right, make the difference between a very good experience and a mediocre one. They are: 1) the welcome, 2) the bed, and 3) the breakfast. Seems obvious, huh? Well, many of these establishments miss one or all three!! But Gerald scored perfect 10's in all categories. He met us at the front door and after we got settled he immediately provided us with good maps, restaurant recommendations (we tried most of these and loved them), a tour of his place, and shared other resources every visitor in Edinburgh and Scotland needs. Each night we slept quietly and comfortably on the bed, furnished with clean and cozy sheets and blankets and grade A pillows. And every morning we indulged in breakfast complete with cereals, fruits, yogurt, eggs, bacon, sausage, grilled tomatoes, toast and croissants, jams, and butters, juices, and coffee. If you add a great location and free Internet access to the previously listed elements for a superb B&B, then Gerald's Place stands far, far above the rest!

  • Best B&B!!!

    by

Gerald provided us a lot of information about the city, includind maps,
books etc and, of course, gave us incredible tips about restaurants,
    city tours etc.
We were afraid about not having privacy in a B&B (it was our first
time), but Gerald is perfect. He knows very much the balance between
to be around and to be far, giving the privacy you need.

Unique Quality: The breakfast is delicious! It has healthy English breakfast, lots of
oats, mix of berries, teas, coffee and even soy milk/yogurt for those
(as me) who have lactose allergy.
The bedroom is huge, super clean, very quiet and equipped with
incredible mattresses, confortable pillows and soft linens. Instant coffee and a tea box are available inside the bedroom, as well as an electric water kettle and a
    mini refrigerator.
The bathroom is really a bathroom and not a “shower room”. Super clean and full of a fancy assortment of soaps, shampoos, conditioners, moisturizers etc.
We highly recommend the Gerald’s Place to our family and friends.
    And, of course, to you!

    BBB !!! Best B&B !!!

    by

Gerald is a wonderful warm man, who welcomes you in one of only two rooms that he has in his place. Yep, you got it right: it is very cozy, very warm and homey. His place is full of pictures, photos and postcards. You feel like home even before you make it to your room.
In "your" room you will find, besides the most comfortable beds on the planet, a folder with all the information you might need - from "what to do" tips to maps and information about tourist attractions. If you need more information Gerald is there to help you. He is local and knows many wonderful "out of the beaten path" places.
The day before he will talk with you about the breakfast time so that is is kind of ready when you come to the kitchen. People, believe me, you don't want to miss these breakfasts!!!!! While you vacuum your fruits/yogurt/musli/oatmeal (the variety and amounts are stunning), and your hot coffee/tea is being served, Gerald Himself prepares eggs, bacon/sausages and grilled tomato for you. Don't expect "eat and go" berakfast. Gerald is here, and before you can say "I am hungry" you end up having a wonderful conversation with him. Tip: schedule at least an hour for the breakfast, because at Gerald's Place it is much more than just the food.
Finally, when you are able to move and roll out from the kitchen (I mean it!) you will also appreciate Gerald's location. His place is on the one of the quietests street, right next to the park, yet just minutes away from the Monument and the Castle.

Unique Quality: Perfect for two couples.
    Great value for the money.

More about Gerald's Place

A home away from home

by A TripAdvisor Member

I found this wonderful B&B on the internet and after exchanging several emails with Gerald I felt like I was just making plans to go home.
When we arrived and Gerald was there to meet us we felt like we were long time friends. Geralds home is very inviting and has a wonderful warm feel about it. The location is perfect for walking to all the major attractions or public transportation. The breakfast are outstanding but what we really enjoyed was the long chit chats with Gerald. The rooms are very comfortable and spacious. The little sheep hand puppet "Freddie" that was on our bed came home with me as a reminder of our wonderful stay in Edinbrugh and our old friend Gerald.

Hospitality with a big H

The name Geralds Place sounds like a second home, and it really is. Me and my girlfriend stayed for a couple of days and we enjoyed it very much. Gerald was always willing to help with things that he didn´t have to get involved with. That is something I appreciate very much. Unfortunately I am not a breakfast guy, but if you are this is the best you can get. Gerald arranges everything you want and then some more.
Gerlads Place is something we will remember for a long time.

To be honest I have to say that Geralds place is not a cheap alternative, but it certainly is good.

Highly recommended!

Warmest greeting ever received

by A TripAdvisor Member

It is Gerald that made our stay at Gerald's Place so memorable. We drove to Edinburgh from Manchester airport after an overnight flight from Boston. After such a journey we received the kindest, warmest greeting I have ever received.

A wonderful accomodation and the heartiest breakfast I have ever eaten which gave me the energy needed to get up Ben Lomond. Gerald worked around our varying departure times to ensure we had a scrumptious and relaxed start to our day. Departure was difficult at times as we so enjoyed conversation with Gerald over breakfast. Gerald went above and beyond to assist us with our plans to ensure we knew exactly where we were going and had the best possible experience.

Highly recommend you visit Gerald who is a wonderful as his amazing city.

What a gentleman Gerald is

by A TripAdvisor Member

My sister-in-law and I commenced our tour of Scotland with a stay at Gerald's place. What a welcome and the breakfasts were to die for. This being our first B & B experience it set the bar high for others to compete against. I think it was the homeliness that enchanted us and Gerald couldn't have been more helpful with hints on how best to get around his much beloved City and what sights to see. Although other B & B's around the country had lots to offer too, Gerald's was by far the best experience for us. We felt we had made an instant friend of him and look forward to him visiting our country and homes one day.

Feeling at home

by A TripAdvisor Member

We had a wonderfrul break in Edinburgh in September 2004. We did not know the city at all and were pleased to be at walking distance from the center.
The B&B was cosy and Gerald was a great host. Always having conversation at the ready and making one feel at ease at the breakfast table with other guests there.
Gerald knows his Edinburgh, which makes him the perfect tour guide.

Don't hesitate, book!
