House Rental around edinburgh

by sacgandhi

We are 8 of family traveling to edinburgh for 4/5 days. We want to live at 15 / 20 minutes (away from city centre) distance from edinburgh and will travel to city for sightseeing. What area/s are recommended? We are looking for 3/4 bedroom self catering or service apartments.

I presume you have not been able to find any where from the accommodation links suggested in the replies to your earlier posting. I suspect such a short term rental for a party of 8 could be difficult to find. Maybe you need to look for an hotel - the tourist links previously quoted will also show hotels.

The problem is infact reverse. We've found couple of very nice options ... the problem we're facing is we don't want to live in the centre of city. We would prefer to be on the outskirts from where drive to centre is not long but we have tranquility of suburbs. I want to know the safer suburbs / areas where driving / moving a little late in not a problem for family.

You know, you really don't want to be driving into Edinburgh city centre, so you will need to find somewhere that has good transportation links, so that you can leave your vehicle at your accommodation. So, your accommodation should also provide parking. You could try somewhere like Corstorphine. However, as the previous poster said, such a short rental for a self-catering apartment will probably be the real stumbling block. Have you tried the University of Edinburgh Halls of Residence? Try also.

If you are looking for nice areas out of the center with good transport links, The Shore, Newhaven and Trinity are excellent. There is Ocean Terminal, a shopping center, and buses leave from there every 5-10 minutes through out most of the day, and it's about 15-20 minutes to the city center.

You don't want to drive into the city because there is almost nowhere to park, and the transport is reasonably cheap and reliable in these areas.

Yes, Corstophine and I agree about not taking the car into the centre.

You are more likely to find accommodation of the size you want in the centre - at a price.

You could, alternatively think of a self catering house east of the city - Prestonpans, Cockenzie area but I have no current knowlege of public transport in that area.

hmmm ... I think I will follow your advice ... I will hire the car only when leaving Edinburgh ... and will look at self catering units around edinburgh.

Thanks & Cheers :-)

Travel Tips for Edinburgh

I have been twice to Scotland...

by burma

I have been twice to Scotland for golf. Played Old course both times. So many very good colf courses. Carnoustie is my favourite. The food is not much to talk about but whisky and Beer is more than OK.

Military Memorial 1

by gordonilla

As a city which has a long military presence and lineage - there are many military memorials scattered throughout Edinburgh.

This one commerorates the link between Scotland and Norway.

"During the war years, 1940-1945, the Norwegian Brigade and other army units were raised and trained in Scotland. Here we found hospitality, friendship and hope during dark years of exile. In grateful memory of our friends and allies on these isles. This stone was erected in the year 1978"

Ocean Terminal

by sparkieplug24

The Ocean Terminal is good place to visit and you could easily spend the day here. There is plenty to do. If you are interested in the Royals you could visit the Royal Yacht Britannia. Or you could spend the day just shopping. You could also spend the day at the cinema complex which has the most comfortable cinema seat I have ever had the pleasure of using and I am not kidding they were great. There is special prices for children on a saturday

Sands at Silverknowes

by zizkov

These sands are situated on the banks of the Forth, about four miles northeast of the city centre, between Cramond and Granton. Stroll along the sands or beachside paths. Parking is available on the road parallel to the Sands. Silverknowes golf course is just to the rear, and a camping/caravanning site nearby. I even saw someone walking their ferret.

The second view shows the sands, the link to Cramond Island, and, in the background, the Forth Rail Bridge. If you cross to Cramond Island, beware - people have been cut off by the tides.

Ignore the West End

by PA68

Most people visiting Edinburgh probably get drawn to the West End of Princess Street/Lothian Road area as being the most obvious place to go out for a bit of nightlife. My advice would be to ignore this part of town unless J-Lo and Britney are your music of choice and you like a bit of a punch up at closing time.

Check out the Old Town, Broughton Steet and the Southside to find Edinburghs cooler bars.
