2 days in Edinburgh & is there anything nice to do in Inchcolm Island?

by tracyskf

Hi,

I will be in Glasgow and have 1 day in Edinburgh. The other day, my friends are going to return to Edinburgh the next day while i go for my summer school.

The first day we plan to take the hop on hop off bus to see the city and stop at Edinburgh Castle, Musueum of Scotland and Palace of Holyrood. Can someone tell me:
- Scott Monument - is this worth going up and what is there to see?
- How about the Calton Hill observatory? Will it be a tough walk up or we have to take some transport? Please advise.
- Where else should we go for a day?
- Any recommended place for lunch and dinner? Not too pricy though, am on tight budget.

For second day, my friends will take the Forth Bridges cruise that goes around passing by the Inchcolm Island.
- What is there to do at the Inhcolm Island and it is worth the time?
Please share with me more details ok.

Thank you very much!

I'd suggest Calton hill offers better views than from the top of the Scott monument. I went up there last week and you get good all round views of Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth. Best way is to take the steps from Waterloo Place.

For good value meals try The Standing Order on George Street which is part of Wetherspoons, all basic fare but OK none the less.

Wetherspoons is worth using in London too; use the link to find pubs in its chain.

The walk up to Calton Hill is tough but in my opinion the views are worth it.

For another good view of the city try the Camera Obscura exhibition near the entrance to the castle. As well as the exhibition itself you can get 360 degree views of the city from the top of the tower. You can see three photos that I took from the top at http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/a694d/4c8a4/4/

Enjoy your time in Edinburgh
Cheers, Clive

Inchcolm is a very pleasant half-day or so, if the weather is good. Very small but historically important.

Hogmanay street party

by awladhassan

Hogmanay is New Year's Eve. Until a few decades ago Christmas was a low key festival , if kept at all. The main festival was Hogmanay, which lasted several days in areas where drink was accepted.
First footing was done as soon as the New Year was rung in, A dark haired person with coal, bread and salt was welcome as the bearer of good luck. After the first foot entered the house anyone was welcome and given a dram [of whisky] and a piece of black bun.
In Edinburgh a street party takes place to welcome in the New Year. People hug and kiss each other and join arms to sing Auld Lang Syne.

Glenkinchie Whisky Distillery

We took a drive out to Edinburgh's scotch whisky distllery situated a few miles to the South-East of the city. There was a great exhibition which had a lot of information about how scotch whisky is produced and the differences between all the different whisky producing regions and what makes them unique in terms of smell and taste. A guide then came to pick us up and took us on a tour of the working distillery which was also interesting. We then got taken to the bar by the guide for a bit of whisky tasting - we got to try 3 different ones chosen by our guide on the basis of what we said about what we tasted.

It only cost £5 for the tour and tasting and put you also got £5 off whisky in the well-stocked shop with the ticket too which was great value.

Stirling

by MalenaN

Stirling is not very big and have a population of 35 000, but it is a city. It recently became the third Scottish city.

Stirling Castle is standing on a hill overlooking the city. Below the castle is the Old Town where it is nice to walk around the cobbled streets and admire the historic buildings.

Around Stirling there are many old battlefields as Stirling has been an important place throughout Scotland’s history, it’s been called the key to the kingdom.

You can easily visit Stirling on a daytrip from Edinburgh or Glasgow as there are frequent trains and it takes less then an hour to go there.
