Great family hotel
by TripAdvisor Member HelenMP
Just come back from 2 nights with our 2 children (15 & 10).
Absolutely first class - the room was large, bright & clean with 2 separate beds for the kids & plenty of wardrobe space. The bathroom was well equipped with bath, wall shower & separate hand shower. The whole hotel has has a refurb & looks great. The pool & jacuzzi were brill - but the sauna was a bit hot! The gym is great & the health spa also offers beauty treatments, but book well ahead. We had breakfasts, rooms service for the kids & an evening meal on our own & all were excellent - the breakfasts in particular offer everything you could possibly want. The Zoo is directly behind the hotel, & the city a 15 min bus ride (from outside the hotel). Book the breakfast as part of the price as they are expensive on their own (2 kids had free breakfasts with 2 paying adults). Definately recommend, particulary for families.
Ideal hotel for Wayne & Waynette!!!

We have just come back from a 2 night stay at this hotel and glad to be home!!
Firstly on arrival we were met with a confused receptionist, who couldnt find our booking with a little help found us but got the wrong package!
We got our keys, headed to our room to find it was a standard twin room when we ordered a deluxe double room!! Back down to reception got another room this time it was a standard room.
BACK down to reception they said they would sort it out - and they did .................... .......................................................wait for it ....................................
we received 2 dressing gowns, 2 dairy milk bars & 2 hot chocolate sachets!! DELUXE???!!!
Over all the whole hotel is in need of a revemp! The food is ok, drink expensive and watch out the dinner bed & breakfast package only gives you a £15 food allowance with the dinner which is not stated anywhere.
Just as good as expected!

We booked into this hotel because it was our first destination after a two-part overnight transAtlantic flight, and we knew we wanted "American style" amenities for at least this part of our journey. This hotel provided exactly what we expected! Good sized room, outstanding shower, good food from room service. In addition, its location on a very main street (although set back, thus reducing noise considerably) meant easy access via bus and taxi (fare to downtown Edinburgh 1GBP on the bus, 7GBP via taxi). Front desk staff was very helpful, booked several taxis for us and provided good information about finding our way around. Having the zoo next door meant an easy landmark for any inquiries we needed to make (like when to get off the bus!). Breakfast was buffet style and included "full English" hot choices as well as cereal, lots of fresh fruit, yogurt, pastries and toast. The lounge was large and comfortable, with a full selection of beers and cocktails. We found the entire experience very good value for the price, and recommend it to anyone whose expectations were as ours.

this is my 2nd visit to the hotel. Had an early flight with easy jet and reached the hotel at 9.00 am, the receptionist was very helpful and the room was ready even at that time,
food and service was great.
many thanks will be back.
What zoo where you staying at?
by TripAdvisor Member l_macd78
We stayed here for a few nights in September with our 2 year old. We arrived after a long journey and was amazed at how close the hotel was to the Zoo.
Main entrance was drab, and rather uninviting - the staff standing just outside - taking a puff of fresh air!
The main foyer was impressive and over looking the bar, we were told where our room was, we were on the 5th floor. The room was dirty, the wall paper was pealing off, and to top it off, the air conditioning was not working on the hottest weekend in September.
complained to reception about the air-con it was dropping brown gunk into the kettle, they said they would get someone up to look at it - no one ever came.
The next day complained again and still not fixed. Complained and asked to move to another room, was told someone would arrange that - again no response.
With the air con not working had to open the windows, the saftey catch did not work - could not open window for the safety of my child - and you could hear the monkeys from the zoo in the room.
We dined in the restaurant the first night we were there - the menu was poor, not a great selection - it was loud and extremely rushed, not comfortable with your child.
The best thing was kids eat free. £14.00 for breakfast was a bit steep, for what you were offered - 1 cup of coffee per person.
Great Location, Great for families, needs some updating
by TripAdvisor Member anitajd
We stayed at the Holiday Inn from Dec. 29th-30th. We had 4 adults and 3 children. The reservations system put us in one family room and one double room. When we checked in, the reception was kind enough to put us in 2 adjoining family rooms. As Americans living (and traveling) in Europe, it is very hard to find large, family style rooms. These were perfectly fine in terms of size. However, the rooms are in need of some upgrades. The wallpaper/paint is peeling and chipping, the carpets are old, yellow water filled my sons' baths, and the interior of the water kettle was yellow too. Also, the heat/ AC unit was not working in my in-laws room. We told the front desk, they said they'd call someone, but it was not fixed.
Other than the cosmetics of the hotel, everything else was better than expected. The location to the center of the city was fabulous. The staff was VERY friendly and helpful. Each of my 3 sons recieved a Holiday Inn goody-bag with disposable cameras, coloring books and stickers. There was even a play area in the cafe/restaruant area!!! It made eating and talking with adults so wonderful. We could see our kids the whole time. There is also a indoor pool, which was a nice treat for the kids and adults.
We were all very happy with the food---the breakfast buffet was a great value (cheaper price if you reserve it when you check in), we ate from the Chinese restaurant and from the cafe/grill.
I think this was a great value for our money. We got a great rate going through Holiday Inn.com. We loved Edinburgh and would recommend this hotel.
standard holiday inn
by TripAdvisor Member Mr Steve-1
Just like most other holiday inns..no big suprises...standard room (but quite spacious) tv, tea/coffee, empty fridge, trouser press that falls off the wall, shower that floods the bathroom. In fact room 308 must hold some kind of world record for the most powerful shower.
Our friends were in a room across the hall, paid the same money but for a much smaller room, so we were lucky in that respect.
Breakfast was usual stuff- help yourself and eat as much as you can. They have a chinese restuarant onsite, but it is closed Sundays, as it was when I stayed. Beware- the bars are cripplingly expensive. Staff were efficient. There was no noise from the zoo next door...however some people pay big bucks to go to Africa to hear lions roaring..so you could get lucky!
Loads of parking onsite and there were no issues with aircon or windows that would not open.
good standard

the hotel, is not located in a fantastic spot if you are heading into city everyday. tho you can catch the bus which is much cheaper than the taxi's, tho its worth paying for a taxi because every taxi driver has a story to tell. Very friendly indeed!
The hotel reception was a little small, and its right in your face as you walk in, the bar and eating area are well decorated and plenty of seating.
We booked and executive room, which was clean and i must rate the showers as a few have, very nice indeed.
Tho our room was nice and we paid more than the rest of our group i was rather dissapointed that the standard rooms were MUCH larger than ours.
Overall, the staff very friendly and helpful, breakfast nice, bar prices crippling (but, they always are in hotels)
An enjoyable stay and the seals and monkeys were a great wake up call..haha
Not clean, rubber sausages
by TripAdvisor Member gremlinuk
Our kid was served suasages which had been microwaved, the waiter admitted this later.
Even though we were in an exec suite, the room was tired, the bathroom needed grouting.
Dont bother, go to the Edinburgh North instead, much nicer and the staff a lot more down to earth.
This hotel location was great for the zoo as it was at the front of it, i guess they took part of the zoo away to put the hotel there, the hotel looks modern but far from pretty from the outside.
