Restarants/Pubs for Lone Traveler

by cheerfulchick

I've been vacationing in Dublin with my friend and now heading to Edinburgh. My friend couldn't take more vacation time off, so I'm on my own in Edinburgh Mon-Thurs.

Can someone recommend restaurants and pubs that are OK/safe for a lone female traveler? My friend and I had so much fun in the Irish Pubs, so I want to see how the Scottish pubs are. I have a Scottish friend that will meet up with me next weekend, but he lives on the other side of Scotland and cannot take off work during the week. I need recommendations for where to go Mon-Thurs on my own that is nice and safe.

Thanks in advance!

I always found the pubs in Grassmarket at the foot of the Castle to be friendly. They can get a bit boistrous during Tatoo, but for the most part I always had a good time.

Although a bit expensive, The Witchery has always been good to me. I've seen mixed reviews, but the 6-8 times I've eaten there over the years have always been excellent.

Hi!

We had a great evening in The White Hart on Grassmarket, there was a very entertaining singer, Graeme Pearson, and the atmosphere was great.

In a very different way, Sandy Bells was also very nice. Smaller, more "solid" atmosphere, and instrumental music played by several locals who do it for the fun of it and not for tourists.

Both places seemed very safe.

Enjoy Edinburgh!

An answer for me please....my daughter may want to go from Dublin to Scotland in a few months....so how are you getting there please?

I know the ferry/train but wondered what else was good or better.

Edinburgh is extremely busy at the moment with the Fringe Festival and then the Festival. All the pubs will be very busy. Stick to the centre of Edinburgh and you will be 'safe'. The Witchery is expensive. Don't bother with the pubs on Rose Street.

For the person asking about traveling from Dublin to Scotland, I'm taking Aer Lingus from Dublin to Edinburgh. I booked via Travelocity several months ago - so the airfare was very cheap ~$110USD.

Thank you Tien...I have been wondering in my mind how to organize my daughters when we go and had not got a chance to search and your reply is sooooo helpful.I am so glad it is Aer Lingus

Wasn't sure how to answer this, so flicked thru the restaurants in my Edinburgh tips. All would be OK for a woman.

Pubs? There are a few under my "nightlife" tips. None seem problematic to me.

On flights, I was looking at Edinburgh/Dublin later this month for about £20 return - Ryanair.

Not going as it turns out.

Agree about Sandy Bell's - traditional. I've been going there since I was 17 (oops).

Also agree about the Grassmarket - I was there last Saturday for the start of the jazz festival - in the Beehive. Should do a tip!

Also agree about Rose Street - too many people doing the pub crawl, and just getting very drunk.

Thanks Iain for my bit...was just a good time in this post to join in with another question.

Stick to the bars on George St if you are in the new town but avoid Edwards and Bar 38. I used to drink in the Antiquary is Stockbridge or the Melville in the West End which are good.

Thanks everyone for your recommendations! I've been in Edinburgh 2 days now and so much is going on with the all of the festivals and Tattoo. It's fabulous here!

TOMMY: Doesn't it make you...

by alexia_lin

TOMMY: Doesn't it make you proud to be Scottish?
RENTON: I hate being Scottish. We're the lowest of the ***ing low, the scum of the earth, the most wretched, servile, miserable, pathetic trash that was ever shat into civilization. Some people hate the English, but I don't. They're just wankers. We, on the other hand, are colonized by wankers. We can't even pick a decent culture to be colonized by. We are ruled by effete arseholes. It's a ***e state of affairs and all the fresh air in the world will not make any ***ing difference. So why did I do it? I could offer a million answers, all false. The truth is that I'm a bad person, but that's going to change, I'm going to change. This is the last of this sort of thing. I'm cleaning up and I'm moving on, going straight and choosing life. I'm looking forward to it already. I'm going to be just like you: the job, the family, the ***ing big television, the washing machine, the car, the compact disc and electrical tin opener, good health, low cholesterol, dental insurance, mortgage, starter home, leisurewear, luggage, three-piece suite, DIY, game shows, junk food, children, walks in the park, nine to five, good at golf, washing the car, choice of sweaters, family Christmas, indexed pension, tax exemption, clearing the gutters, getting by, looking ahead, to the day you die.

While bagpipes existed all...

by seagoingJLW

While bagpipes existed all over Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, it is only in Scotland that they have three drones. It is also unique that they are used for military music by Scottish regiments. the two tenor drones were developed by 1500, but the third, the bass drone, was developed around 1700.

haggis tour

by chaistarr

Due to inconvenient foot and mouth disease, My Haggis tour wasnt as planed....we took some detours. But i enjoyed the detours and slower pace. but darn! i didnt get to hike! heres an excerpt about what the normal haggis tour does...we went backwards on the tour, didnt go thru perth i dont think....yup.

The three-day Skye High tour starts and ends in Edinburgh and takes in some of Scotland's most beautiful countryside. But be warned. It could help to know the words of Amazing Grace as there is quite a bit of singing to be done on these tours.

One of the rooms of Blair Castle

by keeweechic

One of the rooms of Blair Castle. Inside the castle there are around 30 rooms which the public can view. They are furnished with fine paintings, beautiful antique furniture, china and costumes along with the arms and armour. A lot of them are quite unique.
