Nice location
by TripAdvisor Member teninepit
Nice location, real close to the castle, royal mile, princess street. HOWEVER, if you have a car you have to park at the castle terrace car park which is about 2-3 blocks away and cost $10gbp for overnight parking that is the only real drawback. Room was nice size and very clean, staff was friendly. Don't bother with the breakfast, overpriced in my opinion.
Good, clean, well located accomodation

We've stayed in many 'starred' hotels and Travel Inns and we like Travel Inns for their cleanliness, convenience and value for money. We chose this hotel after reading the reviews and was not disappointed. Our room was large (although quite poorly lit) and quite modern for a Travel Inn and it had a nice bathroom. The receptionist was very helpful on arrival and it turned out that we were walking distance from the Grassmarket bars. The only downside is the car park is a (nice if the weather is fine) 5 minute walk and quite expensive (about £12 for overnight), but I suppose it is a city centre and it's still cheaper than parking in London!! I would definitely return to this Travel Inn when we go back to Edinburgh - highly recommended!!
good location and clean too!!!

very clean hotel 5-7 minutes walk from royal mile, 2 mins from grassmarket.
The hotel is very clean and quite welcoming in a fairly decent area of town
Check in was efficient and friendly.
Room was large and very clean with oversized bed and well presented bathroom!
There is a bar on the ground floor and a breakfast area (breakfast not included in room rate)
One negative point - the room we had had quite a bit of traffic noise late into the night (the website does warn you of that) - we specifically asked for a quiet room and next morning when i mentioned this - we were abruptly told "well some rooms are noisier than others" and the receptioned dismissed us and walked away !!!!
Fantastic!!!

A great hotel !!! Most four star hotels can't measure up to this hotel in terms of comfort, decor and excellent customer service. The well trained staff were polite, efficient and really happy to assist, whether it be with my eighty six year of Grandmother or my 6 year old nephew.
Check-in staff were excellent, dealing with our complicated
room requirements quickly and easily. The rooms themselves were fantastic. This was during the recent heatwave, and portable fans had been placed in every room along with the offer of individual single sheets if your duvet became too much.
The restaurant though was the best feature! All the staff were great! Special mention must go to Annie the young lady who went out of her way to be friendly and helpful. A bright future in hotel management awaits this individual. She had that magic touch which is so rare these days. In short, this hotel should not be missed when considering a trip to the lovely city of Edinburgh.
Excellent

I have just returned from a short break in Edinburgh and I stayed at the Lauriston Place Premier Travel inn. The hotel was excellent in every area. The staff were fantastic - very friendly and happy to help. The rooms were modern, nicely decorated and the cleanliness was second to none. The restaurant in the hotel is nice and the food is of good quality with a menu that would suit everyone.
The hotel is just a couple of minutes from the Grassmarket and only a short walk to the Royal Mile and Princes street. A taxi to Princes Street was about £4. With its location just slightly off the main streets it is much quieter than other hotels I have stayed in, in Edinburgh - not as many sirens and crowds! Ideal for a good nights sleep.
The hotel also has a key card entry to the lifts all day and the front door after 11pm this is a good security feature.
Overall I would really recommened this hotel we had a fantastic stay there.
Slowly baked for 4 nights

It makes me a little sad to give a two star review for this hotel, as the location, price and room were all really good. However, we stayed in a week when despite the outside temperature was generally a pleasant high 60's low 70's, the room itself was extremely airless and hot.
As usual, the window only opened about 2 inches and I imagine the heat was due to our top floor position with the sun on the roof all day. The corridors were even hotter and the hotel was clearly worried about this issue as every room I saw had a (pretty useless) fan on the desk and it was always left on by the housekeeping staff for when you came back into the room.
How we would have survived in the preceeding weeks, when temperatures were in the 80's, I do not know. Clearly from other comments on here, the lower floors must be more bearable, so try and nab one if you can. If they could sort out the ventilation, I'd have no hesitation recommending the rest of the package.
Great budget option
by TripAdvisor Member JC_Traveller
A great budget hotel in a fairly central location (not right next to anything in particular but near them all). The hotel has all the basics (TV with a few digital channels, hairdryer, some toiletries, tea/coffee). There's no car parking at the hotel but plenty of reasonably priced car parks nearby. It would be pretty impossible to find free parking in the area.
If you don't want breakfast in the hotel (or 10am is too early for you to get down to the restaurant) there are plenty of cafes & coffee shops nearby. We had ours at '2 thin laddies' (great home baking) down by the Riego Street car park entrance.
We booked quite late and were given a disabled room - this was fine for us but for any disabled guests it would definitely have been a bit cramped (I've stayed in a disabled room before at the hilton paddinton hotel and it was literally 3 times the size and had a walk in shower rather than a low bath like this room) - it was also on the first floor at the end of a fairly narrow corridor through a couple of heavy fire doors.
Basic but great!

We had stayed in a Premier Inn before in London and decided to book our long weekend in Edinburgh and stay in one again.
Can't fault it really. Yeah its basic but it has everything you need. TV, Hairdryer, Kettle, comfy bed!
And its also very very clean.
Great location. Close to the centre (about 10 mins walk). Lots of shops near it, cafes, bars, pubs etc.
The rooms did get a little warm at night but opening the window did reduce that.
Highly recommended

Stayed here for a night in freezing January. Location was fine. A few strip joints and the like in the area but it certainly felt safe.
Very comfortable for a discount hotel. Room was a generous size. Bathroom was spotless - only complaint was a fault with the shower which left water all over door and floor (but we were given extra towels to mop it up when we asked).
Checkout normally 12noon but we were told 2pm would be fine. We ended up being hounded out well after 2 - so we definitely had good value!
I'd stay here again - you know what you're getting!

Computer stores?
by bluegoat
I'm interested in finding an electronics store in Edinburgh that is the equivalent of Best Buy (US) or Future Shop (Canada) - do you know of any?

It's been two years but I recollect there was a Best Buy there- or soo similiar in nature. It's on the outskirts of the city- not in the old city. You would need a cab or a car if you are staying in the heart of the city.

I think the store mentioned above is PC World in Corstorphine (hideous purple building) that you pass on the way into the city from the airport. There is also one at Kinnaird Park in the East of the city.

For electronic components Maplin shops have a good selection with one located in Dalry.

There are several smaller shops, Type in Electrical Shops in Edinburgh in the 192.com directory for listings.
