Early Drinking Pub?

by Paudy1

Hi there,

A group of us are arriving in Edinburgh at 07:30 on a stag and wondered if anyone knows of a place to have a few drinks while we are waiting to check in to our hotel?

Thanks in advance

You could try the Penny Black, 17 West Register Street, EH2
Opens at 5am

I'd second that, not been in there for a few years. This traditionally opened for the railway workers finishing their nightshifts but is more often filled with last nights clubbers waiting for a train home.

Travel Tips for Edinburgh

Ghost Tour

by jccope

Edinburgh has the best walking Ghost Tour. We went on two while in Edinburgh. The first one, City of the Dead Tours, was the best one. We learned a lot about the city in a short amount of time. This is the only Ghost Tour thatactually scared me. It has been featured on the Travel channels show Haunted Edinburgh. The other was a Mercat tour that examined the underground vaults. It was pretty scary but if you can go on the City of the Dead Tour. They start various times after dark on the Royal Mile.

Princes Street Gardens

by Ash59

Between the Castle stting high up on the hill and the main shopping area, built into the area that was originally a lake, is Princes Street Gardens. If you are weary of shopping or need a rest after trudging up the Royal Mile, then visit these beautifully kept gardens. Have a look around while you are in the gardens. There really are some great statues and monuments to be found, one of which is shown in the photo.

snowboarding on plastic

by hanna-maija

although it rarely snows in Edinburgh, it's still possible to snowboard throughout the year - on plastic! the place is called Hillend, just outside the city centre. You can either bring your own kit, or hire equipment there.

Royal Botanical Gardens

by roamer61

For those who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, the gardens is the place to go. One can see many different species of native and exotic plants here, both in beautifully landscaped grounds or in hot-houses.

Nightime... nothing?

by kolabor about none (and that is none, not a name:P)

This tip is generally about Edinburgh- we've been in the centre by night only twice, but the impression is radically differnt than at daytime. Why?

1. Streets full of 13-year-olds aming to look 18, drunk, noisy and not looking the friendliest...

2. Clubs and pubs aren't too exposed and to my knowledge aren't located in one place, or let's say "around" but are spread so Princes St by night is deserted and that's not a "pro".

3. At 1 am there was no place around Princes St I could buy anything to eat- and I mean a shop.

4. People walking around, pairs in love, people chatting on the lovely wooden benches? Not by night- and this is a terrible loss to the city's ambience!
