Best summer month to avoid midgets in Scotland?

by song99

Best summer month to avoid midgets in Scotland?

I am planning a 3 month England, Wales, Soctland, N. Ireland, and Ireland summer trip (starting in Brighton, and working up the west coast (via Wales). My question is when to arrive in Scotland when the insect problem (midgets) is not as severe? I am planning on a hiking tour of Scotland, and hitchhiking as well. If I know when the best time to visit Scotland is, I'll know to start 3-4 weeks earlier in Brighton. It should take a bout a month to take in SW England, Wales, and NE England (before entering Scotland).

Thanks

I dont think you can avoid midgets, but they generally pose no dangers. :-)

If, however, you mean 'midges'......well, they are worst from June to September.

make useful reading.

My advice is to do Scotland first or last, either in April/May or in September/October.

I think its "midges" you want to avoid.

The local midgets are harmless.

Travel Tips for Edinburgh

Edinburgh Castle for Disabled Visitors

by RhineRoll

I cannot highly enough praise the way in which Edinburgh Castle has been made accessible to wheelchair users like myself --given the fact that the castle sits up on a steep hill and was built at a time when barrier-free design did not exist. When buying a ticket at the booth on the Castle Esplanade, ask about help for access. They will call a van driving you right up to the Castle's main building which has a lift. Don't expect to get everywhere within the Castle premises, but the most important sights are possible for you to see -- including some of the bastions from which there's a breathtaking view over the city. Disabled loo in the cafe and shop.

Thank you Historic Scotland for making this wonderful service available. http://www.historic-scotland.gov.uk

Middle Meadow Walk

by Nemorino

This walk leads down through the campus to The Meadows, a large park which borders on the south edge of the campus.

Second photo: From the Meadows there are good views of the Salisbury Crags and Arthur's Seat, which is the highest point visible in the photo.

VAT

by keeweechic

If you reside outside of the European Union, you will most likely be able to claim back the VAT (value added tax 17.5%) you have paid. Make sure you keep all your receipts. Some shops, selling more expensive goods, operate a scheme for overseas visitors outside the European Union, to sell to you without VAT at the time of buying.

View from Watson Crescent

by Nemorino

Here's another place I just happened onto while I was cycling around. I somehow got onto a not-very-elegant street called Watson Crescent, which turned out to be a dead-end street, better known as a cul-de-sac in the U.K.

At the end of it there was a nice view of the countryside at dusk, though I suppose it was not really countryside but a part of Edinburgh called Polwarth Terrace or Polwarth Grove. I don't know what the buildings are called, but perhaps some Edinburgh native can fill me in.

Funky clothes

by Weener about Swish

Really cool and funky clothes for men and women, bought a stunning jacket, it wasnt cheap mind you, but did come with some free chopsticks and postcards, ha! One off designs, loved everything, but sadly credit card already at limit. One of everything please Quite a lot! (but worth it)
